Australia has just announced a new secret deal with the US and Britain…we have scrapped our 90 billion French Submarine deal…and will now procure nuclear submarines including secret technology from both US and Britain…This is Australia’s first nuclear anything…It will be announced by Biden and Johnson very soon.

" the Chinese view this as provocative, and they should" . I guess it is time to say " no more to China".

These subs will be powered by nuclear...they won't be carrying nukes...One of the biggest problems our subs have been having is the constant and long haul from the North of Australia back down to Darwin and Perth...we spend as much time travelling back and forth as we do patrolling the area...Nuclear will allow us to stay in place for much longer.

Not really interested in nukes ready to be sent but keeping in the area the Chinese operations known. This will give time to keep the subs in the area longer.

Not sure if you've seen this, :

The new partnership is called AUKUS, pronounced "aw-kiss."

Yet it is the move toward establishing nuclear submarine capability in Australia, which officials said will allow the country to operate at a vastly higher level militarily, that will amount to the center of the announcement. Nuclear submarines are able to maneuver at greater speeds and endurance, and more stealthily, than conventional ones, which must surface more often.

"This allows Australia to play at a much higher level and to augment American capabilities," a senior administration official said ahead of the announcement. "This is about maintaining peace and stability in the Indo-Pacific."

Diesel submarines are more stealthy in terms of being able to switch everything off...you can't turn a nuclear reactor off...Apparently these subs will be built in Adelaide SA...I'm for that as long as the builds are done relatively quickly...there is no capability until the subs are in the water...its all academic until then.

I'd guess that the US hands over a some 688/688i boats for some Aussie makee-learn while the new nuclear boats are built.

Quick construction? You would be lucky if the first of these boats are commissioned within a decade - British nucs were running about that from keel-laying to commissioning. And they already had the nuclear know-how and nuclear building infrastructure in place. That is why I would guess handing over some of the 688/688i boats to tide Australia over and provide Australian submariners with nuclear experience.

You mean Aussie subs can't make use of the EAC?

Personally i would prefer the subs to be made in Britain or the US - You mob already know how to make these things. It would be quicker, all the problems have been solved...We would probably need some O/S workers anyway...we do have the quality welders here already, thats one important thing we have.
I've always had a soft spot (or is that a hard spot) for the Los Angeles class subs, i agree that one or two to train with might be the logical step...We may recruit US and British sub personnel also...so if any sub commanders want a seriously well paid job and a home in Australia, please apply.

    I wonder

    USA USA USA !

Okay that may just be National pride speaking. But I'd put ours up against any comers.

Edit for just found article :

The Navy has “full confidence we can ramp up” to building three attack submarines per year if the Navy buildup proposed by former Defense Secretary Mark Esper were to be enacted, despite ongoing delays in Block IV Virginia-class construction, the program executive officer for submarines said today.

Esper’s Battle Force 2045 called for the Navy to reach 70 to 80 attack submarines, and he specifically called on Congress to allow the Navy to start building three Virginia-class subs a year as an immediate way to begin implementing this vision – this despite the Navy being on a path to build two a year for the foreseeable future but Esper’s Pentagon cutting the budget to just one in this current Fiscal Year 2021.

    So would I : )
There are a few builders out there though...My question now is where does the UK come into this? Will we build a new type incorporating British and US technology ( i doubt it) - If not will we buy/build a US sub with "some" UK technology inside it? Plenty of questions still...

I think it's more like a Triad between the three. The announcement said 'procure' so my guess is we'll be giving Australia a new car deal with tech support. In return - shared responsibility of the South China Sea area.

Yeah the wording is a little confusing...

"Mr Morrison said the trilateral alliance was the most significant pact Australia had entered since the ANZUS treaty with the US and New Zealand.
The pact will also see Australia acquire its first fleet of nuclear-powered submarines and scrap a $90 billion deal with French submarine maker Naval Group struck in 2016.
Mr Morrison said the landmark production of the submarines in Australia would begin in the next decade.

The fleet will be built in Adelaide, with the new AUKUS partnership to determine the way forward in the next 18 months."

"Acquire" its fleet - and then "The fleet will be built in Adelaide"

    AND

"with the new AUKUS partnership to determine the way forward in the next 18 months." - Leaves open the possibility for some quick "acquisitions".

Still no word on what the UK is bringing to the table...

Amen! Can anyone cite occasions on which China has done or refrained from doing anything out of respect for other nations' concerns?

Well, you knew it, didn´t you? ;)

The leaders of China and North Korea marked the 60th anniversary of the China-North Korea Treaty of Friendship, Cooperation and Mutual Assistance (Peking Review, July 11, 1961) on July 11, and pledged to renew the treaty for another 20 years (UPI, July 7). “Despite the unprecedentedly complicated international situation in recent years the comradely trust and militant friendship between the DPRK [Democratic People’s Republic of Korea] and China get stronger day by day,” North Korean Supreme Leader Kim Jong-un said in his message to Chinese President Xi Jinping. In a reference to the U.S., he also highlighted that the “hostile forces become more desperate in their challenge and obstructive moves” (Rodong Sinmun, July 11). Although many aspects of the notoriously opaque China-North Korea relationship are difficult to judge, the fluctuating bilateral ties recently appear to be on a firmer footing, driven by an alignment of interests, growing tensions with the U.S., and an increased emphasis on shared ideological roots.

    What a BIG surprise.....

Aukus: China denounces irresponsible US-UK-Australia pact

China has denounced a historic security pact between the US, UK and Australia, describing the alliance as "extremely irresponsible" and "narrow minded".

On Thursday, Chinese Foreign ministry spokesman Zhao Lijian said the newly announced alliance risked "severely damaging regional peace... and intensifying the arms race".

Chinese state media carried editorials denouncing the pact, and one in the Global Times newspaper said Australia had now "turned itself into an adversary of China".

Australia had in the past maintained good relations with China, its biggest trading partner. But the relationship has broken down in recent years amid political tensions.

But there is tension now too with France, after Australia tore up a A$50bn (€31bn; £27bn) deal to build 12 submarines by signing this new pact.

"It's really a stab in the back," France's Foreign Minister Jean-Yves Le Drian told France Info radio. "We had established a relationship of trust with Australia, this trust has been betrayed".

What I found about the UK part in the co-operation....

WASHINGTON—The U.S., the United Kingdom and Australia are creating a new security partnership in the Indo-Pacific, building on the longstanding alliance between the three to share intelligence, deepen cooperation and help Australia to build nuclear-powered submarine capabilities as China’s influence grows.

U.S. to Share Nuclear Submarine Technology With Australia in New Pact

Johnson seems to keep their secrets very much undercover so far.....except Australia maybe.
