Hi. Following the tables of the US Naval Technical Mission to Japan a total of 237 Type 91 Model 2 torpedoes were produced in the fiscal year of 1941/42 with 209 produced at Nagasaki Navy Arsenal. Following Pearl Harbor - Thunderfish in the Sky, Japan's Type 91 Modification (pearlharboraviationmuseum.org) 100 modificated shallow water torps were ordered for the Pearl Habor attack. 26 more torpedoes were used for test trials. At the time Kido Butai left Japan to go to the staging area only 50 were delivered. Akagi was ordered to wait for another batch almost finished. Due to the initiated production of the Type 91 Model 3 the production lines of the Model 2s were partly modified and so only a final Model 2 production of 13 Torpedoes was planned in November. With a lot of ordered overtime a total of 32 Type 91 Model 2s could finally be finished in November 41 and equipped with the shallow water equipment. My opinion: This makes a total of between 50 and 82 torpedoes available tor Pearl Habor if only Nagasaki-built torpedoes were modified. And as these were badly needed special production weapons I doubt that there were some left after the attack. Yours tom!
I read about these torpedoes and found it amazing that quite many were flown to the strike force that was on the way to start the attack...
The last chance they had to get the specials would be before they departed Hitokappu Bay. Akagi was late to that party because she was picking up the last run of the torps. (From memory.)
