Does anyone have any info on Ltn. Erich Jung, Luftwaffe pilot ? Am looking for any info and photos, if possible. He may be the pilot who shot at Sgt JM Weir's Lancaster near Orleans on 24/25 July 1944.

    25.07.44 Ltn. Erich Jung 6./NJG 2 4-mot. Flzg. £ S.E. Orléans: 3.100 m. 00.12 Film C. 2027/II Anerk: Nr.77

what type of information ? he has had Altzheimers for years, not doing well at all. His coding was 4R+AN

your pic is not his G-1. and sadly your quoted info is not quite correct as he may have hit 466th sqnd Halifax LV 833 though he thought he shot down a Lanc. This was in the Stuttgart/Saarbrucken area.

your man and late freind Herbert Rauh was probably the victor, his 21st victory flying with Stab II./NJG 4, or Paul Semrau of Stab II./NJG 2.

Thanks Erich. All a bit confusing at the moment trying to trace which pilot it was. Sad to hear Erich Jung is not doing so well. Do you know him well? Can you send me a photo of him?

PB265 was attacked by a Night Fighter near Orleans, 24/25th July 1944. The wing and two engines damaged and on fire. Looking through the Luftwaffe reports I reckon I have narrowed it down to one of these guys...

Eric Jung was not close to Orleans and that is what I am trying to point out in my first posting to you Simon. Rauh and Semrau were and are the likely candidates for your quest, yes it is confusing trying to pinpoint just which NF pilot scored which bomber.

From another authoratative source none of the LW pilots listed scored against PB 265 but as you well noted the Lancaster was only damaged am I correct ?

I was in contact with E. Jung many eyars ago and I ahve several pics of him and his crew plus a pic of him looking better at a LW Treffen but soon after he was struck down and have heard nothing of him since, in fact he may have passed on.

Hmmm. Lancaster PB265 was hit from the port side by an unidentified fighter on the way to Stuttgart. The wing and two engines were hit and on fire and the pilot turned back. Quoted from French site: "the aircraft was attacked by a German fighter over St Denis en Val (Loiret, France)."
According to the LW report I consulted there were only the above reports that fit both time and place. As it states Erich Jung attacked a 4 engine bomber South East of Orleans at 00.12am. This is where I drew my conclusions from. Looking at the map of the area, St Denis en Val is SE of Orleans.
Perhaps the LW report (above) is wrong?
It's my next big mystery in this quest, to find out who the LW pilot was...!

yes the report is wrong it is the archive listing for claims by the LW both day/night housed at the Freiburg archiv's. Simon we are finding and although supposed remarked as being accurate they are no quite. Again I point out in my first posting where Erich Jung shot down the reported BC bomber most likely being a Halifax and not a reported Lancaster as Erich first thought.

Damn, thought I had it ! Well, it narrows it down to just three!! How can I find out which one it was? Are the reports only of 'kills' or are they just attacks or engagements listed too?

the listing you are using is just for claims, the info I have does not list in any probability PB 265 but others on the raid. Personally this does not mean much and sadly to be 100 % accurate we cannot be.

    Thanks Erich
I have another report, this time from the RAF Museum in London, detailing the loss os PB265..."
Very faint first part of report “Fighter out – port wing damaged, Flight Eng (engineer) BO (baled out) over ? , A/C (aircraft) finally brought down ? over beachhead. Other crew baled out and safe, pilot missing.”

    Second more legible part.

“Attacked by night fighter 50 miles into Germany . Inboard damaged, outboard cut, wing damaged. Believed that all of crew baled out four known to have .Sgt Balfour over Orleans . (Cpl) Sarvis safe. Gordon, Reed at different places. Weir landed at St Lo, Coates landed by chute was AG (air gunner) states that Lanc. ( Lancaster ) was hit by HF(perhaps NF, night fighter) 9miles W(est) of St Lo (?) AG while remainder of crew prepared to b-o (bale out).”
“A/C crashed near Liebville Normandy , North West of Carentan Normandy . A/C hit on outward journey. A/C returned and attempted to reach Normandy Beachhead. Balfour baled out over Orleans and evaded, 5 more baled out beachhead and evaded or reached UK . Pilot still on board when A/C crashed and was killed. A/C crashed in US Army part of Normandy Beachhead.”

Interestingly it states that the plane was attacked 50 miles into Germany!! Any ideas???

..........and this, from 3945 Magazine (translation from French copy)
"In this night of Monday the 24th of July 1944, the 576 BS leave the English coast and join up with a unit of 412 Lancaster and 138 Hallifax, and then head toward Stuttgart. Heading south for Orleans and then toward the east until the target. The unit reaches the French coast east of Le Havre, catching sight of the gleam of the fights raging the bridgehead of Normandy where the allied troops trampled on for a few weeks, on the eve of “Cobra”, the great offensive that Americans will launch in a few hours. The unit then reaches the south of the département of Eure-et-Loir. Here, hidden in the shade, a German night fighter is waiting for his prey. He has chosen it. It will be the Lancaster PB 265."

Yet this suggests it was at Eure-et-Loire ? Hence my confusion and interest!

From Sgt Balfour's Evasion Report, the NF attacked and the Lanc was hit from below under the mid upper turret.

    ....and from a French site....

" the aircraft was attacked by a German fighter over St Denis en Val (Loiret, France).

So, so far I have 3 different locations for the attack from the NF,
    1. St Denis En Val (loiret)
    2. Over Orleans
    3. Eure-et-Loire

Glad you say this Erich. There are still some people near Orleans who think it was Jung . Not only he did not take off from here, but he clearly stated he made his claim over Germany. He was not over central France and I'm postive about the fact that he made no Abschuss over Orleans that night

This are all but one place. St Denis en Val = Orleans and the Eure et Loir is just North of Orleans, starting at Artenay (20km north of Orleans)

Lets rule out Jung from now on. As to the three locations, I still have the same problem as Eure et Loire is North West of Orleans, then theres the evasion report of 'over Orleans' and St Denis en Val is SE of Orleans.
So where was the NF attack?
Considering Balfour landed in St Denis en Val, it seems likely it was over orleans, then the plane went into a dive,he baled out. am working on the exact course of the flight up to that point.
