I need help finding out what the abbreviation AS means on a WWII gravestone in San Francisco, CA National Cemetery. It reads: John Doe AS US Army World War II Date of Birth Date of Death What in the world does AS stand for? Thanks for your help!
Could be Assistant Steward. The only U.S. Army symbol that I could find. But the other AS refers to the Navy and that is for Able Seaman.
Thanks for your help! I transcribe gravestones for a website, you know I look at the picture someone took of the gravestone and I type in the person's information so then if relatives are searching for them or if a relative just wants to find out what's on the gravestone they can look up the information. I come from a military family so I love the opportunity to volunteer and concentrate on getting all the soldiers' gravestones done. I research but I don't have access to any particular personnel databases (I can't stand that we have to pay for that info) and it gets tricky not knowing if there's an error in what's been put on the gravestone. For most of them as you type the name in the form a box pops up with the service member's info of some gov't database that only has info such as date year of birth and death and their branch of service so if you click on that it will plop their military information into the form automatically. but many times the info on the gravestone isn't the same as the info provided that pops up. So now you've heard much more than you really wanted to probably. I may be back to ask other questions and if you've a mind to I'd appreciate your help. These gravestones go back to the Civil War.
I've looked in a variety of places and can find no reference to AS in any branch of the military (except for the Navy). Is this a WW2 gravestone? I know you're reluctant to provide specific information, but a picture of the stone would be a big help. Maybe you could block out the name.
Well I don't have access to it anymore. They come up and I do it and I don't get a chance at them again. I'm going to try logging in using another tab and if they'll let me log in with two sites open I'll be able to keep it open until I get feedback. I can try that. The gravestones aren't confidential since they're in national cemeteries where everyone can go. I thought about that later. I wrote your answer for AS down for next time I see it. Yes, it was a WWII gravestone. In fact I just got done transcribing and came across another abbreviation I hadn't seen before. I've seen BSM W/V but this was AM W/I. I couldn't find what W/I meant. I know W/V is with valor but with I I couldn't find. It was also a WWII USN KO War gravestone.
