Some time after the war ended I seem to remember Field Marshall Montgomery stating that Churchill had sent him a telegram near the end of hostilities. This was warning him to stack the German prisoners captured weapons carefully as they may have to reissue them back to the Germans if the Russians didn't stop advancing. Churchill immediately denied doing so, Monty could not produce the telegram. There was a lot of argument about this at the time. Can anyone on here remember this incident? It was quite a time after the war had ended. I can find no mention of it anywhere.
It does not surprise me as much as Patton wanting to do the same. I only have heard of the incident out of heresay. Nothing concrete. BTW, welcome to the forum Dave and happy posting
Hello! This was part of theoperation "Unthinkable" ordered by Churchil. Look up wikipedia or here: http://www.ww2incolor.com/forum/showthread.php?t=4151
Interesting stuff, I've heard rumors of this telegram, but as PzJgr said "never anything concrete" Maybe a few more searches are in order... Oh, and welcome aboard dave74 & egorka!
Further to the above posts. Max Hastings' book Churchill's War is currently being serialised in the UKs Daily Mail. The message to Montgomery is mentioned in the August 26th edition. According to Max Hastings this was kept secret for 50 years but confirmed in 1998 with the release of papers by the National Archive. I've also posted in the Mail on this subject.
