I recall in the older thread that AT rockets weren't really all that effective. I suppose that has to be qualified. I'm not a big fan of the A-10, and a plane as modern as that still needs to catch enemy vehicles in column in order to enfilade them with either cannon or rockets. In the battlefield, you have to make a firing pass with each target you see. So, assuming you have only fighter-bombers at your disposal, how do you stop a couple of armored divisions coming at you?
If the attack is "all arms" your F-Bs are going to get shot up. Then you have no air cover or vertical recon.
Anti tank mines for starters...Pick where they will be bottle necked. Hand held AT weapons have been effective for some time now...And have had Tankies worried for the last 3 decades...And thirdly (but not lastly) you unleash your flying tank...The Apache for the Americans. It can sit off far back and blast one after the other then get replaced.by more Apaches... So the most effective air-to-ground at the moment are attack helos. Australia's Aussie Tigers: She can loop the loop!
The next 20 years will see an explosion (pun intended) of autonomous ordnance...both fired from the ground and from flying platforms...This will make tanks "almost" obselete - Except for the heavily armoured unmanned tanks running about with their armoured (same chasis) anti drone tank following up...This anti drone tank will have at least 2 ways of downing drones (physical and energy weapons) - Plus can deploy its own armed drones scouting ahead and to the sides for human hand weapon soldiers... The next 20 years will make the Terminator battle scenes seem simple...
The Arena is constantly evolving. SFW "Acquisition of the SFW has generated new visions of what future combat will be like. Air Force planners foresee B-1B heavy bombers taking off from bases in the continental United States, flying halfway around the world, and then delivering a full load of SFWs against large columns of advancing enemy armor. Each SFW released by the bombers would be able to cover an area the size of 20 football fields with 40 top-attack projectiles. Because each B-1B could carry 30 of these SFWs, one heavy bomber would be able to deliver 1,200 projectiles over a huge battle area. Instant Paralysis The Air Force doesn’t expect to achieve a hard kill from each projectile, but service officials are confident that little, if anything, would remain on the move after such an attack." Hmmm...Energy weapons and anti drone/missile technology is becoming more everyday...This would work against a less advanced force which, to be fair, the US has the intelligence to only attack... I think missiles (and drones) in fact any air target have already seen their hey-day...There are anti missile missiles, cannon and above all, energy weapons that can take a fast moving object out in about a second. See what Israel's Iron dome is doing as a begining to this technology...Faster ordnance will not trump energy weapons. The tech is advanced enough to be already on platforms and will mature much more in the near future. This in many ways will be a good thing, as Nuclear missiles will also become obselete. I found a bunch of videos of lasers shooting down missiles...This one i chose because it is quick. Remember this was in 2009!
