Was just thinking about the possibility of using these today as bombers...With the engines much less hot than jet engines...If they were packed with chaff (flare or decoy flare) how difficult would it be to bring one down?
Would electric aircraft engines be cooler than piston or jet engines? (Not necessarily) - Would an electric engine obsolete heat seeking missiles?

It's a shame the amount of WW2 aircraft stored in the early fifties that went to the scrap yards and smelters.

I've seen footage of a salvor running bulldozers over lines of P-51s. Easier to salvage if it's already busted up some. No sense of history. But realistically we couldn't sustain all those birds after the technology has moved on and parts just aren't available any more. But one whole squadron of Mustangs would pep up an air show I think.

Obviously Capitalism hadn't really kicked by then. Some dumb-mega-rich businessman missed the opportunity to create his own Air Force. I know I would have !!

The scrap dealers were buying the airplanes a hundred at a time. Some government flunky rubberstamped the deals and good bye birdies.

The number of aircraft sitting on the ocean floor within a few hundred miles of Japan would boggle the Mind ! And the sad fact is :: We put them there! Then Again : : :

It was nothing compared to the space aboard ship left available for returning personnel.
