I saw the beginning of a flick on the IFC last night called C.S.A.: The Confederate States of America. An alternate US history if the South had won the ACW. I couldn’t bear all the racist crap it spewed, and turned on U-571 instead.

While eating lunch, I turned on my TV to TCM and saw a b/w WWII movie about a US Army unit fighting for control of an island in the Pacific. I think I caught the middle and unfortunately, I couldn't finish the movie because I had to get back to work.
Maybe one of you guys might recognize the movie and tell me its name?
The movie's characters included a one-star general who acted like a martinet, a young lieutenant who was his aide and later sent by the general to join a platoon on a recon mission. The general constantly harassed his aide, even to the point of ordering the aide to make sure that there are fresh flowers on the general's desk everyday. This was show the aide that the general has the power to do anything he wants.

The platoon's mission was to establish a recon post on top of a mountain. To get there, the platoon went by boat, landed on the other side of the island and made their way through grasslands and jungle. The young lieutenant was wounded when he decided to take point and find out if the Japanese troops guarding the trail up the mountain had left. The platoon was given four days to accomplish their mission: One day to get there, two days for recon, and one day to get back to their boat.

I had to cut my viewing short because I had to go to work. The last part I saw of the movie was when the lieutenant was wounded and the platoon sergeant taking command, instructing three of his men to put the officer on a stretcher and take him back to their boat.

Finally finished the extras ( documents, making of ) of "Hitler and Speer- the devil´s architect" only 4 hrs 30 mins....( 2005 )....

Must say worth watching as there is lots of comments by friends and family on Speer, the Holocaust, and Hitler. Also must say the crew did a great job by making all the camera angles, clothing, weather the same as in the real footage from the 1930´s and 19340´s etc. Great work!

Hi Falcon, I THINK I know the film you are talking about? Did this film have Cliff Robertson as the Lieutenant who gets wounded? and also did it have Aldo Ray as a Sergeant who seemed on the brink of being crazy? If so, I KNOW the title but can't think of it at this time? Also, I THINK James Best and possibly Joey Bishop were in it.

Check the IMDB site under Cliff Robertson, and the title will be easily recognized.

Currently watching "Submarine Mission Impossible" a documentary about a Australian/Turkish expedition which dove on the wreck of the submarine H.M.A.S AE2, which was sunk after successfully penetrating the "impregnable" Dardanelles strait in April, 1915.

Thanks for the tip. I did that what you told me and the title of the movie is The Naked and the Dead.
Just saw an interesting show about snipers at the History Channel last night.
Good show with a lot of sniper scenes from the American Revolution to present day. Of course, I wouldn't want to be on the receiving end.

Thank you so much dgmitchell for the find on the ww2 cartoons (salute!!).

On the subject of Combat, I recall a "Humor in uniform" story from the Vietnam Era.

A squad directed to clear a village found that none of them had training in clearing a town/village. One of the new members asked if the others recalled an episode of Combat that had the Combat squad clearing a town. When they all recalled the episode, the squad set about clearing the village just like they had seen on TV.

There seems to be an audience for WWII-themed cartoons so here are a few more!

Bugs Bunny Nips the Nips YouTube - Bugs Bunny - Nips The Nips Yes, there is a lot of stereotyping in this one but it was a war era cartoon, so what should we expect. If you listen to the voices closely, you will hear a lot of Daffy Duck in the Japanese voices (at least I hear it).

Bugs Bunny War Bonds Campaign YouTube - banned bugs bunny cartoon Bugs doing his part for the war bond drives!

Spirit of '43 YouTube - Banned Cartoon Donald Duck Donald Duck stars in a morality play encouraging American workers to save their money in order to pay taxes and to Save for Victory! What are you going to do? Spend for the Axis or save for taxes?

The Ducktators YouTube - The Ducktators - Banned WW2 Anti Nazi Cartoon Hitler as a duck. Looney Tunes mocks the Nazis.

Private SNAFU in SPIES YouTube - SNAFU - SPIES - 1943 One of a series of Private SNAFU cartoons. This one warns the viewer to be wary of spies. I have a bunch of links to these cartoons and will post more later.

    Cheers!

The most amazing dvd ive seen in a while , i came to post it and find you guys talking about it..sort of.
Its a compilation of banned cartoons , politically incorrect , stereotypes abound , lots of WW2 ones.
Donald duck , Mickey mouse , all the disney gang , tex avery , droopy , popeye , roadrunner, bugs bunny , foghorn leghorn , elmer fudd , daffy duck , betty boop and some characters ive never seen before , the big bad wolf from red riding hood seems to have had his own career albeit short lived.Old Tom and Jerry..it just goes on ...

The artwork is astounding in the cartoons

Other than that Daz Boot ..The Boat....Classic , doesnt get any better

I started Destry starring MOH recipient Audie Murphy earlier today. I became an Audie Murphy fan by the time I was about 7, which sadly was a couple of years after he died. To Hell and Back remains a favorite.

"The Hitler tape" a US document on the taped Hitler´s conversation while visiting Finland on Mannerheim´s 75th birthday.

I think I missed a bit earlier ( when I saw it a year ago ) as now I heard Rochus Misch say that Hitler did drink a beer occasionally ( he saw it ) and also before big speeches used to take one short drink, more like a Campari-type bitter drink.

I watched a 1996 movie called "Mars Attack !" that was pretty good. It made fun of the 1950's type monster movies and had a really good cast.
Slim Whitman saves the planet. :D Tom Jones sings in it too.
