Well, I enjoyed the show because I saw it as a story of Sir Winston's life with Clemmie and their problems more than a WW2 show exclusively. WW2 was sort of used as backdrop and a method of "fixing" the scenes in a time-frame. I have the Gathering Storm on my "to see list", I loved Finney in the previews that were on the Into the Storm DVD, that looks like a winner.
If you like the Winston and Clemmie parts, you'll enjoy the Gathering Storm Clint because that is a big part of that film as well. Vanessa Redgrave played Clemmie very well in my opinion. There were parts of that film that almost made me teary eyed with their love for each other.
Sink the Bismarck. Cant get enough of that film and Kenneth More did one hell of a good job in it. Speaking of: Rest in Peace Baron, it was nice to know you for what little time I did. :mourn:
Ah... the Horse Soldiers. That is the very first John Wayne movie that I appreciated as a kid. I've seen John Wayne movies before as a child but the Horse Soldiers stuck in my mind. Hmmm... thinking about that movie reminded me of the old Rat Patrol series, namely because like those in the movie Horse Soldiers, the guys in the Rat Patrol had a somewhat similar job.
Sink the Bismark... now that's one movie that I've seen several times but always in bits and pieces. I've never had the chance to see it whole in one sitting. This reminds me of another good naval thriller, "Enemy Below." If I recall correctly, it starred Robert Mitchum. That movie started my interest in sub movies which was further strengthened with Ice Station Zebra (which was a Cold War film).
Hi Fal, you show goot taste with the titles mentiioned ESPECIALLY The Horse Soldier and The Enemy Below. As A kid I never got to see hardly any John Wayne movies as they werre just never aired on any TV satation we got at the time. I had always heard of amny of his older ones like Stagecoach, Hondo, Sands Of Iwo Jima, The Fighting Saebees and such, but the oldest Duke movie I got to see as a kid, was Rio Bravo. We only got to see a handful of Dukes movies like: The Alamo, Big Jake, Rio Lobo, Rio Bravo, The Green Berets, The Flying Tigers, Cahill, The Cowboys, McQ, Brannigan, True Grit and Rooster Cogburn. None of the others were ever aired on local TV stations-and I dont knwo why??? Strangely enough, my interest in submarine movies also started with The Enemy Below and your right, it starred Robert Mitchum along with Curt Jurgens, Doug McClure, David Hedison (as Al Hedison) Theodor Bikel & Kurt Krueger,
Looked like the original. I think there was a John Mills marathon going on. Had to have been made in the 60's
My taste really comes from my Dad. He really loved military related movies and TV shows: Garisson's Gorrilas, Combat, Rat Patrol, etc. I recall sitting down with him and when a specific scene was shown, he'd explain why such a move was done.
It's a Lee Marvin night for my Dad and I this weekend. We picked The Big Red One and The Dirty Dozen for our weekly WWII movie watch.
Hi Ike and thank you. Oh and, im hoping to get an extra copy of it soon and if interested on one? please elt me know? Take care-_Carl. Forgot to mention, am still watching The Flying Leathernecks-in bits and pieces. Still watching Hannah till tomorrow and have not had much time to look at it.
Finally got round to watching Schindler's List. Had a rainy evening and a spare 3 hours! Good film with some great acting.
Bought myself the box set of the Bourne films, The Bourne Identity, The Bourne Supremacy, The Bourne Ultimatum. All I need is my popcorn some cold drinks and I'm set for a movie marathon.
History Channel - World War 2 Lost Films. and also Enemy at the Gates that was based on a true story.
You cant go wrong with Lee Marvin. My favorite with him is Dirty Dozen then The Big Red One--for starters. Ive been watching loads of classics lately startinf with Cagney in White Hear, Bogie followed him in High Sierra, then Gregory Peck followed him in: Captain horatio hornblower RN, then Duke followed him in Hondo ;-)0
EATG was a good movie for what it was but, it is less than truthful. No sniper duel between Zaitzev and a Maj Koenigs. The Major koenigs. For one, the Major never existed.
I liked this movie too. Its more lik ethe older traditional war movies and not like the oliver stoner crap.
