I think it was quite good. I bought it on DVD this Friday for $18 and watch it on Sunday. As a Richard Burton and James Mason fan, I rather liked it. It's well-done and the story and script are good. The only thing I found as a very big mistake is that Rommel is already a field marshal in 1941 when he's trying to take Tobrouk. You must not be that big a fan of Mr. Burton since you didn't get his first name correct! It's Richard....not Michael! But I will take some solace in the fact you didn't call him Tim!
Ooops! Sorry, Ivan... I just messed things up. As there is an actor called Michael Burton —not a good actor by the way— I confused things. But yes, it's Richard! No, I wouldn't have confused him with Tim Burton, because he's a director. A mentally sick but very good director, by the way.
The Desert Rats has always been one of my favorite films. I bought my copy for 9.95 at www.deepdiscountdvd.com about 6 months ago. Burton aka MacRoberts, and Mason aka Rommel boith were excellent in this fine film. I love the theme music as well "Waltzing Matilda" ...Waltzing Matilda waltzing matilda, you'll go awaltzing matilda with me...down through the ages da da da da da da ........... I think Robert Newton was in this film as well.
Gordon, well, I did watch it as I had Pizza for supper and some soda pop. Ahhhhhhh, was an enjoyable evening. When this movie ended, I turned to a cable TV station and lo and behold, a classic war movie was just startig. This movie is: "Halls OF Montezuma." Ahhhhhhh, a great night indeed.

Actually, thank GOODNESS, Richard Widmark is still alive as well as Karl Malden (The Corpsman) Walter "Jack" Palance (Pitch) Robert Wagner (The young soldier that Widmark had pulled out of the water at Tarawa) and Martin Milner (The scared replacement) and I think Skip Homeier (the tough young guy who carried his Luger)and was the B.A.R. Gunner. I don't know the name to the guy who played Widmark's stuttering former Chemistry student. He was the one who repeated the phrase: "Hope is the mother of all men." Ah yes, just remembered. Malden played Omar N Bradley in 'Patton'. I think that he and Palance are still alive. In fact Palance has an interesting WW2 connection - think I'll start a separate thread....
Correcto, Palance and Malden both are still alive. Infact, just last week, Karl Malden got a lifetime achievement award from his Hollywood peers. He played General Omar Nelson Bradley in Patton. Martin is also correct about Walter "Jack" Palance and ww2.
