Is that you John Wayne, Full Metal Jacket, an excellent war movie, nice avatar, I think I have one of those hanging in my closet;)

Enemy at the gates, liked the river crossing and assault but when the political officer showed up it slid downhill from there, snot nosed kid anyone?

Yeah, that was the first war movie I saw with my Dad. It's entertaining and most of the time it's completely cut up on TV(missing parts) The DVD is more enjoyable and the way I remember it was as a kid, uncut. By no means is it a film, but it's fun sometimes, if you don't watch it to death.

    Cheers

I agree, the TV version does not do the movie justice. The DVD shows it unedited with several deleted scenes included. But the best scene of all is still the Panzerlied scene. I always have the urge to get up and stomp my feet and join in the singing.

U-571 is by far the WORST WWII movie in my book. Just to name a few issues....

    1. S-Boats never had the range to travel into the mid-atlantic.
    2. It was not an American crew nor an S-Boat that originally captured the enigma and codebooks.
    3. It would be completely impossible for an American crew of only six or seven, to come aboard a German U-Boat for the first time, and somehow manage to operate and dive the boat, even with the help of a translator. Type VIIC U-Boats usually had about 50 men on board, and granted not all of them needed to be working at the same time, but a crew of seven Americans on a German sub just can't figure out how to operate a U-Boat in less than 60 seconds.
    4. Even if you want to believe they could, it was completely impossible in WWII for two submerged submarines to attack each other. I almost threw up when I watched this part of the movie. There was only one recorded instance of two submarines in WWII attacking each other submerged, but they were both at periscope depth and both could see each other, unlike in U-571.
    5. When the destroyer comes onto the scene, this was absolutely unrealistic. German escort vessles rarely left the safety of their harbors, and they never ventured out into the Mid-Atlantic, especially unesorted.
    6. When they dive beneath the destroyer, and one of their propeller shafts is sabotaged, the American captain remarks "We'll never make it to allied aircover on one shaft." It would be impossible to make it to allied air cover on two shafts! Submerged, U-Boats generally could not travel more than 80 miles before having to recharge their batteries. If they were in the Mid Atlantic, 80 miles wouldn't bring them much closer!
    7. The depth charge attacks are all wrong. Charges exploding that close to the U-Boat would have cracked the pressure hull, but they somehow magically survive.
    8. The real U-571 never particpated in any of the events that the movie shows, I have no idea why they picked this boat as the one to depict.
    8. This movie is just a piece of Hollywood garbage that was only made for gung-ho Americans who like to see stuff get blown up and have no concern about the historical aspects of what they are wathcing. If your looking for a genuine U-Boat film, Das Boot is defintly what youll want to see. Again, this is just a brief summary of how I feel about U-571, and although I could spend hours writing about its historical innacuracies, lets see if you guys can save me some of the trouble; any thoughts on the movie?

I doubt very much there will ever be a movie that is 100% historically accurate and there may be some members of the Kriegsmarine that could disect Das Boot as well.

I do agree that U-571 is more fiction than accurate and is made purely for entertainment purposes. Even then, it fails at that. I do agree with your review of this movie which is why it does not grace its presence in my DVD collection but Das Boot does!

While I agree with GoGators as he had excellent points, I am still going to pick Windtalkers as my worst movie...... :D

U571 reminds me of that awful movie which I only saw previews of Knights Tale more Hollywood Garbage

I like Battle of Britain Michael Caine's dog looks like my old one;)

The staffing run was well done in the beginning just outside of Sedan refreshing not to have CGI all the time like Pearl Harbor. Pearl Harbor had Kate Beckinsale and Jennifer Garner so I can't complain but it was too over the top and as another chap mentioned It ain't in my collection:cool:

I agree with PzJgrs post abouit U 571. Also, he is correct in that there are Kriegsmarine submariners that could take apart Das Boot, I know because I spent two days with them in Bad Camberg, Germany in 2000. They did completely dismiss U 571, they did not care too much for Das Boot and, amazingly enough, the U Boat vets I talked with, liked: The Enemy Below; as their favorite film of this type.

A few of their reasons for that was that the Kapitan (Curt Jurgens) and the XO (Theodor Bikel) reminded these guys of how their Kapitan: Kurt Freiwald; was. They also appreciated with this film, that the German Submariners, were not depicted as fanatics-having only one member of that crew as being interested in Hitler's policies.

This is what they told me when we discussed these movies.

I did like Windtalkers first battle part.. but then.. eh. Even as a crazy teenager who craves action, I wouldn't watch that with a HDTV!

I like the oldies.. 'cept the part that they didn't seem to care that the Tigers and Panthers were the same tank.. and that same tank was a American tank.. oh jeez.

I went to go see Pearl Harbor when it came out. It was funny to see plenty of people in the movie. Then the film rolls and about 30 minutes into the movie.. large portions of the crowd simple get up and leave. Quite honestly, I would say there was maybe tops 10 people left in the theater.

The enemy below is an excellent movie. The reason why the Kriegsmarine like the film is because of the camardery and honor shown in the film. Another good example of this is Battleground 1949( a good flick in this genre told from the American perspective.)

Hello Herr Oberst, I fully agree with your assessment about both films.

When I was at the reunion in 2000, I made it a point to talk with Dieter Hille and a few others about that film. This movie was the first Robert Mitchum movie I ever saw. Many a Friday or late Sat night, this movie was shown. This is also how I became a fan of Clint Eastwood (especially in movies like:) Kelly's Heroes and Where Eagle's Dare. Those two movies are what made me an Eaastwood fan partly because those movies are my first memories of him. It's too difficult to accurately pick the exact John Wayne movie-that I first saw and in which made ma a life long fan of his. Im thinking it's The Green Berets, or: The Alamo.

Not the worse movie, but the more I watch "Bridge at Remagan", the more I dislike it. Those US tanks lined up in a row knocking out the 88s up on the hill
seems unlikely. If those 88 crews had any kind of experience, those tanks would've been picked off one by one.

Somehow our stars find boats to sneak up on that river barge that has an MG 42 in it. Why not just blow it with a bazooka or a tank??
Just seems too over dramatic for me.

    Enemy Below.
    .....................

How did Robert Mitchum seem to know the u-boat's depth all the time?

As a money maker I can find it difficult to find fault with him, As an actor he was okay in Minority Report(I like SciFi the good stuff like Blade Runner, Dr Strange Love, Clock Work Orange) but please....He's slightly better than William Shatner(Ie overactor) He's also not too bright in the lady department, He went from Big business to the Board meeting.

Translations available for the comedically challenged, send your check to....;):D

My current vote goes for, "Hitler Dead or Alive."

Filmed in 42 as an attempted moral booster, it's more of a low budget slapstick comedy to me.

A team of ex-con bounty hunters goes to Germany in search of Hitler. The flick closes with Hitler being shot by his own troops because they didn't recognize him without his mustache.

What's this about William Shatner? I heard he was a vocalist. Not an actor.

Speaking of the movie: "Hitler, Dead or Alive." Didn't this movie have Ward Bond in it? if so, it really aint that bad of a stinker if I recall. I have not seen this movie geeze, since I was a kid and they had shown it on PBS on a Saturday or Sunday afternoon. Also, I remember more that the characters dressed in Cowbuy garb and were the ones after either Hitler or either after a German spy-ring-or something like that? ANd I do remember that Ward Bond was in the film im talking about. Will have to do some checking on that matter.

Whiteflight, when did you see this movie? I have not seen it for over 30 years.
