If nothing else, all the movies mentioned in this thread are candidates for the "Movies we'd like to see remade" thread, lol.

Seems like the Russian version of Pearl Harbor. Too darn bad.

Then I guess "In Harms Way" falls under the first category. Would "Battle of the Coral Sea" fit in the second category?

D-Day Sixth of June is a bit of a yawn-fest melodrama. And, while I know some people like it, The Devil's Brigade is very longwinded. It could have been great if it was more like the Dirty Dozen.

You call it cliche', I call it reality. Spielberg was trying to sum up the components of the American army in his characters. Each man represented a segment of the army. I don't see how that is "cliche".The part where the coward avenges his buddy himself by shooting an unarmed German was equal parts troubling and understandable. Spielberg is subtlety challenging our(Americans) perception of the GI's.

As for the pilfering of the bodies and the shooting of Germans. We all know that happened and we all know that it happens for a variety of reasons. Combat stress was one such factor.

Shall we give him a blindfold and last smoke or just shoot him as is? ;)

I saw "Burnt By The Sun - part 1" and found it really interesting. It was a good view into what many Russians today think of yesterday. I'm sorry to hear such bad reviews for part 2 and think I'll just skip it. "The Fortress" seems interesting but is in Russian (which I don't speak).

By the way, many of these movies really say more about us today and how we look at the past more than anything else. Maybe that's why "Pearl Harbor" is much more a melodramatic romance than anything real. Same perhaps for my pick ("Dirty Dozen") and "Inglorious Bastards" and our present view of the Nazi 'Brass'.

At the time Pear Harbor came out I lived far back in the Arkansas Mountains. I had to drive close to two hours to see it - what a let down! It especially PO’d me to see A. Baldwin as Gen. J. Doolittle - but then to believe a US pilot could fly in the B.O.B., Pear Harbor and the Doolittle Raid was just too much.

I have one for this category that I don't think I have seen mentioned on this list before - Never So Few (1959) starring Frank Sinatra, Gina Lollobrigita, Steve McQueen, Charles Bronson. Probably not the worst WW2 movie ever made, but definitely worthy of mention.

The story itself is actually pretty good and is worthy of decent treatment by a film - an OSS-led group of Kachin natives fighting the Japanese in northern Burma. But the script dialog was simply pathetic and the acting was wooden and devoid of any passion. One of Sinatra's worst roles.

I had my first negative reaction to Pearl Harbor in the opening seconds, when they show the date January 1941 and a newspaper headline about "German Armies on the March" - that was one of the few times in 1939-41 when German armies were not on the march anywhere.

As a Navy man, I did get a chuckle out of seeing 1970s-era ships under attack. Apparently one of them, a Knox class FF, was sufficiently badly damaged by pyrotechnics that her planned sale to Mexico was cancelled - the last casualty of Pearl Harbor.

I assume "Pearl Harbor" was made for a young audience as entertainment to make some money. To older folk all and all pretty ridiculous.
But within the far too contorted computer generated scenes I saw the possibility of the WW2 film of the future. Obviously one cannot reconstruct Battleship row with period ships and agonizing over which mark of P-40's were used could possibly be alleviated by truly top notch computer generated images using the detail the Japanese apply to models today. You could have a specific model of a ship, plane, tank, etc in perfect detail. In "Pearl Harbor" they exaggerated all this to silly effect but presented in a realistic manner and carefully integrating it into a film in the foreseeable future is not out of the question. Their simply is not enough WW2 equipment out there.

So "Pearl Harbor" as bad and goofy as it was showed me promise. It should be possible to show Operation Goodwood fairly accurately in the future.

Of course, perhaps the best computer animator going, George Lukus, gave us "red Tails " !!!! Still I think there is potential here.

You should see the uncensored version of Pearl harbour. It is available in 3- or 4DVD version I recall. The censored version seems like Walt Disney version. Not commenting the choice of actors, though.

Looking over the films here, I have to agree with post 452. Too bad they all aren't in German. (No offense intended to our German friends, just why do they have to be in English/American) ?

Could I please add The Fortress Fortress (Video 2012) - IMDb I figured being under the weather (annoying flu) I would watch this movie so I made the Hubby get it for me. Yikes! Bit of a mistake... I could not watch it, it was utterly cheesy (and this comes from a person that loves all the cheesy romance thing haha) I reallly could not watch more than 30 minutes of it! I guess I was fooled by the trailer which looked good, but the movie is a must miss.
