I shall be grateful if somebody sends me any links to description of the military way of the 18th Panzer Division of Wehrmacht. During invasion in Russia this Division operated as part of Army Group "Center". The Division commander - Walter Nehring. Maybe someboby met his memoirs, published in English? I was particularly interested in the period: late June - early July 1941. The fact is I'm interested in describing the feats for which was awarded the title Hero of the Soviet Union. Recently, I was interested in the circumstances for which colonel Kreizer was awarded this rank. He was the Commander of the 1st Motorized Rifle Division. This was not an ordinary Division. Number One - it says a lot. It was located not far from Moscow. It took part in military parades. In this Division were selected only men of Slavic appearance. Armed with this Division was a new technique. And most importantly - the Division was deployed in wartime. June 22 the Division had been near from Moscow. June 24, it began moving toward the front by rail and road. From 26 to 30 June, it was the defensive line near the town of Orsha. At this period of time, the Wehrmacht ended environment of Soviet troops near Minsk. Guderian's tank units began to move to the Dnieper River. On their way was the river Berezina and Borisov-city. From 1 to 10 July 1st Motorized Rifle Division, retreating from Borisov to Orsha, was fighting against 18th Panzer Divisions of Wehrmacht. July 12, Colonel Kreizer was wounded and taken to Moscow. On 22 July 1941 he was awarded Hero of the Soviet Union. Interestingly, he was the first rifleman the Army, awarded since the invasion of the Wehrmacht in Russia. So I decided to learn more - why? Colonel Kreizer`s reward document do not contain specific information. Only common phrases: heroism, courage and so. His Division had 225 tanks BT - 7 and 40 T-34 tanks. In his memoirs, Kreizer wrote about two major opposing tank battles at the 1st and 3rd of July. Memoirs of the other generals contain a description of these battles too. A Operations Chief 13th Army (which included the 1st Division) describes that during one of the battles Colonel Kreizer personally involved in it, being in the tank KV. On the other hand. I found no mention of these opposing tank battles in the diaries Halder (only July 5, 1941 - "concern about loss of the 18th Division fighting the Wehrmacht in the forest"). Guderian, July 3, mentions the attack of the Russian and the large losses of the Red Army. Moreover, among the documents of the Red Army`s Western Front (period - July 1941), I found combat report (dated July 2), from the Commissar Susaykin (he was a Chief of defensive of Borisov-city). He writes that the 1st Division refuses to participate in the fighting. During this period, specifically on July 8, another event occurred that Kreizer describes in his memoirs: as a result of counter-tank battle of Colonel Kreizer`s Division Tolochin city was occupied. There were captured 800 German POW, 350 cars and the Banner of the 47th Berlin Panzer Corps. I could not find confirmation of these facts from the other party. I would be grateful for the help.
