The official existence of the 2ème Division Blindée did not begin until August 1943, when it began organizing from the 2ème Division Legere in Tunisia. However, Philippe François Marie, Comte de Hauteclocque did take command of the dozen or so members of the 501ème Régiment de Chars de Combat (CACC 342 with H-39), which withdrew from Norway to Britain after the fall of France in 1940.

When it landed on the Continent in July 1944, the division was equipped primarily with Lend-Lease Medium Tanks M4A2 (75mm) and M4A4 (75mm) (147). It also received some M4 (105mm) (18) and M4A1 (76mm) (36) from ETOUSA theater stocks when it arrived on the Continent). It also had as Lend-Lease, 80 Light Tanks M3 and M5.

FFI tank units eventually also received some M4A1 (75mm), M4A3 (105mm), and one M4A3E2.
