I've just found something out tonight about my Grandfather Albert Curtis. I knew he was in the Paras for most of WWII and saw a lot of action all around the world. However, I'm quite choked about what I was told today. When the war ended my grandfather was sent to Jerusalem. Once there his reg was ordered to fire at the boats bringing in holocaust survivors to stop them getting ashore. He and the rest of the lads refused, downing their rifles and I believe someone, possibly a Leutenant, said they hadn't spent 6 years fighting to free these people to then lower themselves to the level of the Nazis. The survivors were allowed off their boats and there was no courtmarshal. All this has come from the dregs of my mothers memory so I would dearly love to find out more about this incident. I had heard snippets of something like this event occuring but I don't know the facts and to discover my grandfather was there blew me away somewhat. If anyone here can comment, speculate, or offer any facts and information Id be very very grateful. Thanx for reading.
