Hi, Looking for any information about the 356th Harbor Craft Co in 1944-45. My Dad served in this unit. As far as I can tell, they were last stationed in Rouen France until the end of the war. I believe my dad was assigned to a Motor Pool while in Rouen. Any info would be fantastic. Thanks
In the Unit Citation and Campaign Participation Register, Dept. of the Army, 1961, I do not see a 356th Harbor Craft Co. There is a 355th and 357th Harbor Craft Co. Are you certain of the unit number?
I did find a partial roster for the 356th Harbor Craft on the Camp Gordon Johnston Association website. Unfortunately, there isn't much more on the 356th there. You may want to try contacting the CGJ Association to see if they can offer any assistance. By the way, Wekz1, would your Dad happen to be the last on on the roster?
I found the same links as Tom. You might also look here and contact them Camp Gordon Johnston World War II Museum, Carrabelle, Florida I was not able to find much else on the 356th. Sorry.
Thanks to all who replied. Yes, that is my Dad at bottom of the 356th Roll. I tried to reply individualy, but it would not work. operator Error I'm sure. I have already been through the Camp Gordon Route, and they had minimal Info. I have been able to get some Unit Movement Info, but I cannot find any info on the 356th TC Harbor Craft Co. while in the ETO. They arrived in England in Early Sept 1944 Aboard the USS Mariposa.
Based on your information that they operated at Rouen, I searched the Army official histories online and found descriptions of Rouen in excerpts from the Engineer, Transportation Corps, and Logistics books. I found no specific mention of the 356th TC Harbor Craft Co. The Engineers opened Rouen o/a 12 October 1944 so the 356th may have gone straight there from England. IIRC the Logistics book indicated the 11th Transportation Corps Port something operated the Rouen port so you might pick-up pieces of information from their activities (if any are available). You can download the whole volume of the Transportation Corps overseas operations here. I would not expect to find a specific mention of the 356th TC but they might discuss the formation and function of the Harbor Craft companies. The Transportation Corps - Operation Overseas - U.S. Army Center of Military History Support units are not well covered in books and the Internet so your best hope would be that there are unit records at the National Archives. That would require you to visit or hire a researcher or make an e-mail request (I tried once and got no response).
