This was drifting my 'K98' thread O/T slightly so I thought I'd continue it here.

After the introduction of lacquered steel cases due to raw material shortages, the Lugers experienced difficulty with extraction. The 'ST+' stamped cartridge was introduced with better tolerances and improved extraction performance - but the P.08 was still plagued with extraction problems.

From 1941, packaging of steel-cased ammo was marked NUR FUR MACHINEN-PISTOLEN ( for machine pistols only ) and surviving stocks of brass-cased Pistolenpatrone 08 were officially reserved for use in remaining Parabellums from January 1943.

This information is via John Walter's enormous ' The Luger Book ' .
