Found this article interesting: http://www.armytimes.com/story/news/world/2015/06/22/okinawa-japan-soldier-anniversary/29070981/ Trying to talk people out of caves in that situation must have been extremely nerve racking.
I suspect that it was also extremely nerve-wracking to see mothers with their children and babies jump off cliffs into the ocean to die. I believe that back in the late '50s there was a movie about this-sort of. It was supposed to be about a white boy who was raised by Nisei and spoke the language. He became a marine who was able to talk many into surrendering. I can't remember the name of the movie, who starred in it, or if it was based on a true story or not. It is totally mystifying why this unit and its activities were classified so long.
