Could they not be accidentally shot by a canon or similar?

Propane cannons can run them off. Your neighbors should be informed before you open fire. Otherwise Homeland Security will be ... inquiring.

Fill a balloon from an oxy acetaline tank. Put it on a paper napkin where it won't drift off. Light napkin and step back. Repeat as necessary. No cannon required.

But the cannon doesn't require crazy shit like lighting globes of propane. Just sayin'. (Posted from Lakehurst, NJ.)

Well when you combine carbide and water you get Acetylene (or is it Hydrogen?) so it's sort of the same thing. No metal parts to worry about with the balloon and a bigger bang and cheaper . Less controlled though.

Oh no evidence left with the balloon either. :)

Bigger bang? Than a propane cannon?

It does depend on how big you blow up the balloon but if it's more than a few inches ... yeah. More gas and (well) mixed with O2 rather than air.
