Air Chief Marshal Sir Edgar Rainey Ludlow-Hewitt, was the Air Officer Commanding-in-Chief of the Bomber Command of the R.A.F, who was responsible for the planning of the brilliant bombing raid on Sylt on March 19, 1940. Before the Great War he was in the 1st Battalion of the Royal Irish Rifles, but he transferred to the R.F.C. at the outbreak of hostilities in 1914.
