am i right in thinking that during wartime, air raid shelters such as andersons had to be paid for or was there a type of means testing before you were allowed one.
Anderson Bomb Shelters were given free to households along with nuts and bolts and instructions on how to assemble them (they came in prefab sections). They were suppose to hold a family of six.
Steven, Anderson shelters were supplied by local councils, and were free to people earning less than a certain income. Think I'm right in saying the council also built them, but it was up to the people themselves to put a 4' thick layer of earth over it as a final protective measure. Councils also built public shelters of brick with concrete roofs, usually in streets or other public and easily accessible places. Regards, Gordon
