I just received an email from someone in Dodewaard, in the Netherlands asking me for assistance in tracking down some info on US dogtags. Apparently he found two US dogtags about 5 years ago and wants to return them to the family. He has made some attempts online to track down the owners, but things are made a bit more difficult in that the emailer doesn't speak much English, only Dutch, and my Dutch is atrocious. I'm using google's translation to help communicate, which seems to be working ok so far.

I've asked for photos of the dags, and hopefully he can supply us with when and where he found the tags also. So far that's all I have, but seeing as his location is fairly close to Nijmegen this may be an interesting research project. Any all help is appreciated.

More info will be posted here as I get it.

I've created a dedicated thread for the second dogtag on Phillip A. Nichols here.

Here is the first dogtag. My first though is that the condition is really very good. I'm wondering what these tags were made of, and if they would look so good after 70 odd years?

We've found them before, I feel good about locating the soldier who wore this one.

I checked the NARA casualty lists for the respective counties in PA and MD and found no Allen Taylor listed as KIA, MIA or POW.

I found a Sgt. Allen S. Taylor in Company G, 502nd PIR (right hand column, 21st row), but that could be coincidence. It's not an uncommon name. As far as I can tell Sgt. Taylor was not KIA, MIA or POW either.

Added: This is from the 502nd PIR history (see link above):

This would put Sgt. Taylor in the vicinity of where the dog tag was found, which is SW of Arnhem and on "The Island".

Very quick work all around, thank you all. Hopefully he survived the war and simply lost the tag somewhere.

I've move the thread from the Information Requests area to Military Service Records & Genealogical Research which is a bit more accurate. I'll compile all the info into the opening post when I get a chance. The other dogtag just arrived in my inbox, so a new thread will be started for him.

More on the location of discovery, info is from the person who found it.

The dogtags which I have found was near the road called “Waalstraat”at the place of Andelst.
This place is in the community called “the Over-Betuwe”.
    The district is called Gelderland.

The dogtag of Allen Taylor was laying a few meters off this road at the depth of about 20 cm
The dogtag of Phillip Nichols was about 600 meters further on and a hundred meters off the road at a depth of about 25 cm and a year after the first dogtag.

I've not had time to dig into google earth, and plan to do so later this evening.

If you need some translation from Dutch to English I will help you with it. I'm Dutch and can translate it for you. Google Translate is not doing well with good translations is my opinion on it from translation from English to Dutch

Thanks for the info Natman, glad he survived and lived a full life. It looks like we will be going after next of kin then.

You probably have an account at ancestry.com? The links don't work for visitors, they ask for a login for me.
