It's finally here. Long in development and planning, the WW2 Open Resource Group is now open. Un-officially launched today (June 6th, 2016) this new site will serve two major functions.

One role will be an online lexicon of the Second World War. This will be a comprehensive encyclopedia for people, places, events, and machines of the Second world War. A major emphasis will be biographies of WW2 veterans from all ranks and nationalities. No level of "fame" is required for entry on the site, any veteran who served is a worthwhile topic.

Another function will be to archive Second World War historical materials. The site will be used to to aggregate all manner of primary source research materials.

The site will be edited by selected members from two of the largest WWII discussion boards. The WW2 Forums and our sister site WW2 Talk.

The site is early in the building stages, but we've already begun to populate information on the site. Take a look at the site at WW2.ORG.

Link or borrow from our sites at will.

One thing we might do with this is to use Google Earth to locate important sites. We can share this with the users (with a little tutelage) to help them find the place on GE and put that in context of the area around the battle/fort/conference, etc. Just a thought. Needed: One map fanatic.

BTW, the kind of thing I'm thinking of would the locations of the Nagumo Kido Butai and the USN carriers in early Dec., 1941.

Maps have already been discussed. The imperials over at WW2 Talk have collected a few dozen WW2 locations already.
We've got a long list of goodness in the queu for that site, but all of it has been tabled for about 30 days until the two forums are migrated.

In the "for what its worth" department, I have all of the 30th Cavalry Recon's ETO locations mapped and in an Excel file.

    I like the concept too.

June is slated for forums upgrades and migrations. In July I'll be focusing on WW2.ORG, and will follow up with you then.
