I recently purchased a photo album which I believed belonged to a German officer. This isn't the album owner but a postcard of a handsome young man. There's a photo I saw online of Major Dr. Eberhard Zahn that made me think this was him as a younger man but it's probably not him. I'm also curious as to what it says on the back of the photo.
nice pic note the 99 on his shoulder boards, 99th Infantrie -rifle. he is an Obergefreiter in rank, back of pic hard to make out my eyes are terrible today, ab Jäger, and it looks like the name of a spot on the planet. someone will fill you in on the back side soon
Thank you for the information! I looked up Obergefreiter and it said: Obergefreiter {m} [Luftwaffe] mil. Leading Aircraftman [RAF]Do you think the young man was an aircraftman?
no he is in the Army possibly in a mountain rifle Kompanie of a mountain division. Obergefreieter means he is a corporal - (upper) and has the denotion of two chevrons. Gefreiter would only have one. Hauptgefreiter or would have three chevrons. The German navy also uses Gefreiter as well as the Luftwaffe-airforce
Hes definately a G.J. I have shoulderboards from two of his sister units-the 98th and 100th Mountain Regiments.
got someone to find this info peggy.."Hahnloser unser Gb(Gebirgs) Jäger 1. Kompanie" - Hahnloser should be the name of a person..ray Hahnloser unser= Hahnloser our..
You can also see he is wearing a Bergmutze, with the T-shaped eagle and cockade and the eidelwiess on the side is just visible as well. Jerry
Wow. You all are amazing. You've given me more to research. I am so clueless on all this stuff. Thank you for all the info!
Whats even more is if you look at the piping on the boards-the cyphers and in the "Roman Columns" of his collar tabs, you can see the color isnt white but darker indication a shade of Green. Too dark to be Jagers or Panzegrenadiers.
