Anybody going to be watching "Greyhound"?

I believe it's on tonight. I was a little put off by a review + the trailer. Set in early '42 it's about an American destroyer in the N. Atlantic guarding a convoy. An adaptation of the English novel, "The Good Shepherd"

 

I too heard the reviews were not kind, which is unusual for a Hanks film, especially a history based project which he tends to do well.

 

Where I had the problem was with some questions I had about historical accuracy. True, the set it was filmed on was a real WWII destoyer but the movie was touted as being highly accurate even though based on an C.S. Forester novel.

My questions are: 1) The trailer showed the U.S. destroyer with radar. Did our smaller ships even have radar then?
2) Hanks is supposed to be the escort commander of the convoy. Any convoy would have to be a combination of UK and USA ships. Why would an American, whose country was just getting into the war, be named the commander? and by whom? At that time (early 1942) the USA was taking a shlacking on our East Coast because Ernie King didn't like convoys and disliked Brits even more!

 

I'll watch it when it comes out on DVD.

It was filmed in part on the USS Kidd (DD 661), a 1942 Fletcher Class Destroyer here in Baton Rouge. Slipdigit toured it a few years ago when he was in town for the Mardi Gras. I've been on it a few times myself. It is one of the best preserved museum boats in the country, or so I've read. I like to watch movies that were filmed in the area. Adds to the mystique or whatever.

 

I rewatched the trailer and might be a good popcorn movie and it might be another U-571, especially to our UK- Canadian folks.

 

I would watch if because Tom Hanks is usually good value and its a real Fletcher class DD. The review today mentioned the Germans hacking the escort's intercom system. This was a stage too far.

 

So the Germans don't taunt the escort over the R/T?

 

From reading the script, it appears to be the TBS frequency that the German are broadcasting on. They change to TBS Channel Zebra, and no more German taunting.

In the one instance, didn't bother to look for more.

 

Well? Did anyone watch it and if so, give us a review?

 

I'll wait for it on DVD..as I don't have AppleTV+..wonder what happened to that 8th Air Force movie Hanks and Spielberg mentioned years ago??

 

Full disclosure, this is a friend's review, but he's a Brit, works for the Royal Navy, and is a historian, so...

"If you want 90 minutes of relentless WW2 naval action - imagine the Cruel Sea squeezed into two days of one convoy battle - then Tom Hanks' Greyhound is superb.
Relentless, definitely not a flag-waver or star vehicle, and free with a week's Apple TV. Not too much annoying CGI either - the participating ships and boats mostly look real, even when they're not.

Would have looked even better on a big screen at the cinema..."

 

Hanks also was sorry that it wasn't on the "big screen" but was happy that it was actually shown somewhere.

 

Actually, OP, I think we do. A lot of old drive-in movie places have been dusted off. People can watch a movie without being endangered by (or endangering) others. Definitely a big screen on those.

 

Coming out end of this year or beginning of next year.

Hanks & Co. bailed on HBO and went with Apple...Bastards!
