My dad was a member of the 1298th Combat Engineers Battalion assigned to Nagasaki, Japan in September 1945. Starting in the later part of October 1945 these troops where being discharged for return to the states. They where sent to the 11th Replacement Depot, Nagoya, Japan where they would be shipped home. My dads records indicate leaving December 15, 1945 and arriving January 2, 1946 in the USA. His place of residence at the time was Portland, OR. My questions would be. Is there any records of what ship an enlisted man would have left Nagoya, Japan on? And what port on the west coast they arrived at? I can only assume the 11th Replacement Depot would have kept some sort of record of who was boarding what ship.
Records of Replacement units are not easy to find. Here is a brief personal account of a veteran who served in the 11th Repl. Depot: Basically, they were a clearing house for troops moving from one place to another. Since no one stayed there for long, the records were probably not considered historically important. I did find some records regarding Companies A & C of the 1298th ECB being transported to Nagasaki from Hawaii. They were apparently attached to the 2nd Marine Division during the Occupation. That's not quite what you were looking for, but I thought I'd mention it anyway. Sorry I couldn't be more helpful.
Same site that mcoffee used, but a different page. The list obviously is incomplete, but the closest I could find is the USS Crenshaw. It landed in Seattle. http://www.ww2troopships.com/crossings/1945b.htm
If you want, PM me with his info. I can run it through Ancestry (if you haven't already done that) and approach it from the other angle. They have passenger lists as part of their collections and if he came back on a private sector vessel as opposed to a liberty ship (like the Queen Mary as an example; it brought the 82nd Airborne Division home), it's possible he'll be listed somewhere. I've found info on several vets in this manner. Adam
