I was looking through my grandfather's pictures when something caught my eye that I didn't notice before. The knife he has on his side says Attu. I was hoping someone here may know something about it. Where they issued to the soldiers on Attu?
Looks like a KABAR to me or Navy MK2 Fighting Knife. I am not sure what the Army period equivelant was.
Richie I think your right, I found this old ebay auction for a trench knife that looks like the one my grandpa had. It also says Attu but not with white letters. I could be wrong, but that looks like its the same knife.
Hi Josh! I agree that the writing was probably put on by your Grandfather. My Grandfather, who took part in the Kiska invasion, did a similar thing with his belt buckle. He made this and a bunch of other stuff, just to fight to boredom that took hold in the Aleutians before and after the fighting.
Why the bulge at the top of the blade? There must be a purpose as to why the blade is shaped the way it is.
Nice piece for more than one reason. One of them being that the scabbard has my exact birthdate-day and month but 24 years before I was born.
As some of you may know my uncle recently passed away, in his possession was 2 knifes that belonged to my grandfather. My aunt gave them to me and I was hoping to learn more about them. I believe one of them is the same as in the picture. The other looks like it may be a shortened bayonet, but that just a guess. This is the one I believe is in the picture, the thing is it doesn't have "ATTU" on the sheath. I saw this picture from my grandpas album, and the shape of the handle lead me to believe the second knife used to be a bayonet. My dad said there used to be pictures of naked women in the handle. LOL
That's a cut cown M1910 or M1905 Bayonet. When the Army transitioned to the Garand from the Srpingfield they cut down the majority of the existing baynets for use with the Garand. The Difference between the 1905 and the 1910 were length and the handle. There should be some marks on the blade next to the hilt.
