Auschwitz is decaying,prompting preservation effort

    Yes, when I was there in April 2010, all the barracks were closed.. sad.
    And they were already pulling wooden pillars against some barracks, and they were working/building some other things.

    Also sad is that stupid visitors wrote on the walls inside the barracks ( visible through windows )..

    what can they do to preserve it short of tearing it down and rebuilding it all?
    why not just build a big building over the whole camp?

    It's a shame to hear that it's decaying. Hopefully the stone buildings will be preserved and protected from graffiti and manmade things, but the barracks are certainly the main issue here...

    I have wanted to visit for a long time. My dad visited Dachau back in the 1980s and he said most of it was still intact save for a few wooden reconstructions. Scariest place he's ever been, he says.
