Here is a site a friend of mine from high school sent to me. It is about his dad's B-24 His father was Sgt Peter B. McWeeney http://www.458bg.com/crewkj18hoffman.htm
That's a nice website. Good to see it will be around in the future. Way too many WWII unit websites are going offline as the veterans pass away. Do you know what a "NTG" is?
Hi Nateman. Here is my guess. Standing: Bill Coleman - N, Ralph Hoffman - P, Bill Simmers - CP, F/O Bledsoe - B Kneeling: Peter McWeeney - NTG, George Bily - TTG, Laurence Kannon - RO, Don Boudreau - TG, Oscar Loveless - E, Milton Randall - BTG P Pilot CP Copilot B Bombardier N Navigator NTG Nose Turret Gunner TTG Top Turret Gunner RO Radio Operator TG Tail Gunner E ? BTG Ball Turret Gunner
You're right about NTG. I'm used to B-17's and the bombardier/togglier also ran the chin turret. "E" stands for Engineer.
"E" would be engineer, usually shown as F/E. The flight engineer on a B-24 was usually the top turret gunner also. In this case, he and the RO would have been the two waist gunners. Some crews wanted the top turret manned even when the F/E was performing his duties as such. In those instances the F/E was most often a waist gunner. Always good to see these sites as I'm a bit partial to B-24 crews.
