Now Farrah Fawcett, Ed McMahon, Michael Jackson, and Billy Mays are dead.Cops: TV pitchman Billy Mays found dead - Life- msnbc.com
I am also surprised and saddened by his demise, I didn't particularly like the "pitch man" part of him, although I did purchase at least two items he demonstrated. The "Mightly Putty", and the "Hercules Hooks". I saw a use for both, and used PayPal and the online sites rather than the phone to buy them. Oh, I also did that for the "Glass Wizard" glass cleaning system, that works great. That was one of those "buy one get one free" deals, and I simply gave my other one to a fellow OTR driver for his birthday. He loves it for inside windsheild clear-up. Billy Mays' delivery was a bit "over the top", but the products he hawked seemed to be as advertised when I purchased the few I did. RIP Mr. Mays.
There was supposed to be a show about Billy Mays and that other spokesman - a contest - too! What is happening!?!?!
You didn't miss anything, Skip. He probably was a good guy, but his delivery turned me off, making me not want to buy anything he was hawking, which I didn't.
How does one become famous for infomercials? brndirt1, Did the mighty putty and the Hercules hooks work?
I always found his commercials where fantastic. They were entertaining to say the least. Never have bought anything that he sold though. Mighty Putty looked like it would be something of use though. Skipper, you can look up on youtube and find his commercials. R.I.P.
Easy. His commercials were shown Country-wide on average of some 400 times per day-according to whatever news station I was watching over at my Brothers house yesterday. Good "Pitchman" (the Astros could have used him Saturday ) but I too never bought any products he advertised though a couple of them were ones I could have used.
Yes, actually both worked as advertised. I didn't use the "Mighty Putty" to tow any 40 ton semis, but I repaired some trim on my Fiero which was getting loose, and I also used it to fashion a lower "hook" for my upright vacuum cleaner when the factory issued chunk of plastic broke off. Still working in both instances. The Hercules hooks are great actually, I have hung pictures, computer speakers, and other items from my drywall with ease. Don't know about the "carry strength" which he showed off, but they work quite well for normal weight stuff a guy wants to hang on the wall.
another guy who pushed himself to the extremes...........so much so that the heart just can't take any more. sad loss he was a fun guy to mimmick
Billy Mays autopsy hasn't been revealed yet, but there is (among his friends) suspicion that the head injury he received the afternoon before his demise may come into play here. The jet airliner he was on had a landing gear collapse on landing, and it came down hard. When this happened all the overhead luggage fell out of the storage sections, and Mays took a hard lick on the noggin from one of the items that fell on him. He complained when he came home of feeling whoozy, and it may have been that he had a hemotoma bleeding into his brain. He laid down and fell asleep (something one is not supposed to do after a blow to the head), and passed away.
Billy Mays was a throwback to the days when people had to work to sell their wares. Using TV to mass market put him over the top. You might have loved his energy, hated his delivery, thought his products were great, or junk...but you KNEW him. You could see his picture and know exaclty who it was. That was, IS, the point of the pitch man. They used to sell snake oil and licorice gum, now it's Oxi-clean and Mighty Putty. The man was a genious of advertising, and if you disagree with that...you're daft. He invested in most of the products he endorsed, and made a killing off of it. A black on black 300,000 dollar Bently proved that. He was the last of a dying breed in the retail world, and I for one, deeply respected his sales pitch. I only wish I could sell a tenth of the product he moved.
