http://www.homelanfed.com/index.php?id=13198 Good looking new WW2 real time strategy game coming out soon... (From a couple screenshots I have seen, the Karl sp. Mortars are one of the playable units. ) Anyone heard anything about quality? I'm going to try and find a demo tonight...
I downloaded the demo last night (Yay high-speed DSL!!)... I'll post my thoughts after I give it a shot...
PIcked up this game a week ago... http://www.cdv-blitzkrieg.de/english/index1.htm Good stuff, gents! Pretty much your basic WW2 real time strategy game. The engine is pretty godd, although I did see some of the common problems- units get stuck, units take foolish routes to get places, etc. But the overall engine is as good as anything I've seen. Nice graphics, and more or less everything on the map can either be blow up or occupied. Or occupied then blown up... Graphics are pretty good too. Another nice element- there's no building units or gatheng resources a la command and conquer. You have your forces, and that's it. However, see below on logistics- units can be rfreshed and resupplied. The game does have some real stand out aspects. Over 250 units in the database, and some REALLY cool playable units. You can actually use the Karl mortars, railway guns (I'm pretty sure), all the vehicles that historically fought, plus they included things like the maus, IS3, some other "in design" stuff. Nothing that seems really fictional or anything, just some units that never made it into production. And a nice aspect of the units- things like guns, mortars, etc- crewed weapons- can be captured if you can knock out their crews and leave the weapon intact. Logistics- nice touch- you have to keep you units supplied, or they run out of ammo. You get supply trucks (the accurate ones... Opels, Hanomags, etc...) that need to be set up supplying units, and certain ones that resupply troops, gun crews, etc. In addition, you have engineer units that can build fortified trenches, lay barbed wire, lay mines, and repair any unit. Another stand out, at least in my book- air support is VERY well done. You can't actually deploy any air units- you call for one of five types of air support- recon, fighters, bombers, group attack, or paratroops. And one of the cool aspects- fighters can usually quickly and easily shoot down any enemy aircraft- but they can't attack anything on the ground, and they fly in too large loops to be good for recon. So it turns into a gamble when you call in air support- if you opt not to go with fighters, it leaves you open to air attack. but calling in fighters means none of those lovely Stukas come in and devastate the Russian tanks... One note though, which is really annoying on the part of the developers- out of the box, NONE of the keyboard command shortcuts work. You can't even assign units into groups! BUT- they did just release a patch that solved the problem for me, and others reported it solved as well. And the only other real drawback- part of the campaign is doing "random" missions- non-historical missions added in to give you a chance to gain rank. Oh yeah- forgot to mention that the game does in fact follow a relatively accurate historical sequence of campaigns and equipment. Back to the gripe- the random missions are great and all, since you can upgrade units and gain rank. BUT- they tend to get very repetitive within each chapter. To move up one of the ranks I got, I had to fight three random missions that were basically the same one right after the other. Gets a bit tedious... Overall- so far I'd give this game a 4 out of 5. I'll update after playing for a while more...
i as well have the game (i did not name myself after it). It has quite a few good qualities, although the infantry play is weak. I know that tanks dominated the field, but in the game the perhaps overly dominate it, and, aside from defense, infantry are best back at the supply depot. That and the repetitiveness of the random missions are the main drawbacks, but it still is a good game
The games as realistic as Kelly's Heros and as fun to play as a harp with no strings. Nothing has changed from the demo and there are so many pathetic errors and unbalances that the game is simply unplayable without you moaning for stupid stuff. "No you stupid tanks! Don't turn around! Reverse! Revvverse! Noooooo.... aww, c'mon that ain't fair, did that tank just shoot through a wall? Agh!" And so on.
I think Blitzkrieg is pretty fun and well made for something that moves in (supposedly) real-time. The comparison to Kellys Heroes is rather apt to me, nowhere near reality (but with certain elements from it) and good fun, amusing and slightly exciting. Most equipment has their historical capabilities and the battlefields look great getting churned up by artillery, tank tracks and bombers. It certainly shows that the designers aren't complete morons with their WWII history. Overall thumbs up, and an ++++ rating out of +++++.
I prefer sudden strike II with Real-warfare? Anyone who has had the pleasure of RWM then check out www.grossdachshund.com/crap Its great, increases gameplay by 350%. You can msn add me at zealot919@hotmail.com if you ever interested in a game.
I have Blizkrieg. I like it, but some of the missions are a bit long. I like how guys can hide behind trees. It is also cool how if you run your cursor over a tree it will tell you what type of tree it is. The fact that tanks also have machine guns makes the game more realistic.
I think it is an awsome game, there is nothing like calling in 4 b-24s to annilate the heavily defended enemy city, and then using your various heavy artillary to pound anything else into submission. It is a great game, espicially on multiplayer. Blitzkrieg 2 will own!
