    Dover's ordeal ended with the surrender of Calais on October 1st 1944. In the area of Britain's “front line town” 2,226 shells fell during four years bombardment which began on August 12th 1940. Townsfolk emerged from their cave shelters to join in the celebrations of “liberation day,”
