I seem to remember somebody mentioning a "what if" fiction book that looked back at WWII after the fact, written as if Germany had won WWII. The thing that stuck in my mind was that the tone, phrases, attitudes, etc of the book were of the "winner writes history" slant which would be so odd to us today. These were apparently quite striking to read, and the book had much more impact than being just another "what if" alternative history novel. Anybody know what book this may have been? Or if there are many books of this nature, please offer some suggestions. Thanks, Paul
SS-GB by Len Deighton. Perhaps you'll find more to your liking at http://www.alternatehistory.com/discussion/
Also there is Robert Harris with Fatherland. What is striking is the plots of these two books are simmilar but differing endings but essentially the same. Also another book is by Guy Walters or Waters and it is called The Leader.
Just to add this one to the list........... Fatherland Fatherland (novel - Wikipedia, the free encyclopedia) The film version was so-so.
A novel I enjoy reading is called And All the King's Men by Gordon Stevens....it starts pre war and deals with the recruitment of men for a similar organisation to the Auxiliary Units, looks at a successful German invasion and then life in a Nazi Britain and a fight back.....it's a good read....9/10
You might be thinking of: If Germany Won World War II Amazon : Amazon.com: If Germany Won World War II: Charles A. Mills: Books How the war was lost by the Allies and how the world looks in the year 2000. Using authoritative sources (footnoted) the book outlines the war aims of the Nazi leadership as if they were realized. The following is an excerpt: "With the collapse of the Soviet Union, America stood alone. Germany began construction of bomber bases in Iceland, the Azores, and the Canary Islands (Shirer, 879). Although Germany did not have aircraft capable of reaching the American coast in 1942, plans for new super weapons, to include long range bombers and submarine launched missiles, were initiated...'.In a kind of delirium the Fuehrer pictured for himself and for us the destruction of New York in a hurricane of fire. He described the skyscrapers being turned into gigantic burning torches, collapsing upon one another, the glow of the exploding city illuminating the dark sky.' (Speer,87)."
