I have DESIGN AND DEVELOPMENT OF FIGHTING VEHICLES by R.M. Ogorkievicz, but still haven't read it. I think it starts in WWII up to "today" (back then in '69  ).

I would strongly recommend that as it EXPLAINS the way tanks are designed - and why - rather than just describing them.

Although slightly dated, I think Len Deighton's Blitzkreig could fall into this category, and it explains some of the basics, probably nothing you don't already know Paul, but for a newbie interested in finding out about early tanks and the embryonic tank tactics it's still worth a read.
