This may get me a LONG LONG list but what recomendations do you have for books on tank and other AFV development around the world upto and including WW2?
British & American Tanks of World War Two by Peter Chamberlin and Chris Ellis. German Tanks of World War II by Drs. S & R Hart Russian Tanks of World War II by Tim Bean and Will Fowler
I have DESIGN AND DEVELOPMENT OF FIGHTING VEHICLES by R.M. Ogorkievicz, but still haven't read it. I think it starts in WWII up to "today" (back then in '69  ).
How about "Armor" by Richard Ogorkiewicz ( Stevens and Sons, London, 1960) and a more recent work by Lieut.Cnel. Paul Malmassari :" Les Blindes de L'ONU ; Chars de Combat, Artillerie et Blindes en Operations de Maintien de la Paix (Editions La Plume du Temps,, April, 2002)-l understand an English language edition is on the works-profusely ilustrated ...and well documented..
I have: Panzer: A pictorial documentation by Horst Scheibert German Tanks of WW II by Geroge Forty Panzer, The illustrated history of Germany's armored forces in WW II Encyclopedia of German tanks of WW II by Peter Chamberlain and Hilary Doyle
Add: J. von Senger und Etterlin, "Die Deustchen Panzer: 1926-1945 (JF Lehmans Verlag, Munchen, 1965) Crow, Duncan (Ed) "British Armored Fighting Vehicles :1919-1940( Profile Publications, Windsor, 1962) Alistair Horne, "To Loose a Battle" (Little, Brown and Co, Boston, 1969)
I would strongly recommend that as it EXPLAINS the way tanks are designed - and why - rather than just describing them. Tony Williams: Military gun and ammunition website and Discussion forum
Although slightly dated, I think Len Deighton's Blitzkreig could fall into this category, and it explains some of the basics, probably nothing you don't already know Paul, but for a newbie interested in finding out about early tanks and the embryonic tank tactics it's still worth a read.
