Bradley appears to have three stars on his shoulder, thus Lt. General. If so, determining when he received his fourth star might at least provide a cutoff date for the picture.

Likewise both Bradley and Patton in the photo with Ike.

Booterhouse, you have a Treasure Trove of photographs. I sincerely hope that you never part with them. I have a few US Army Signals Corps photo's as well. Most show German Soldiers recently taken captive, and another shows two G.I.'s in some village sifting through a huge stack of captured rifles.

Yes I do have a nice collection of photos. They were given to me as part of an estate from my father, who, like you folks, treasured history. I will keep an album to pass onto to my boys. But, rather than keep the rest in storage I will sell many. I truly believe that they would be better appreciated in someone elses collection. Again, Thanks for all your help in identifying pics and items. I have many more to post.

    The jeep pic.

I can't see the unit markings on the bumper of the jeep, that would be major help. No one is wearing unit patches either. The soldier to the left with his tongue sticking out looks to me to be holding a movie camera. Does that look like one to y'all? He is also has a holstered pistol on his belt which was not commonly carried by infantry, except for officers. The tall man in the center is wearing a jump suit, which makes me think he is a part of a maintenance outfit. The jeep sure is loaded, look in the back and there is something under a tarp on the hood.

I am wondering if this is a photo unit that is stuck and has gotten help getting unstuck or if a photo unit showed up where a maintenance group was at work.

These are certainly Ardennes pictures. My guess is that they are the final days of the Battle of the Bulge when the Americans are "cleaning up". Possibly January 1945. The 1944-1945 was a very cold winter and these pictures show some light snow or mud which would rather make me think of a mild period with light night frost and a little snow. It would be interesting to check the weather for December 1944 and January 1945. Some periods were extremely cold, I believe in February. The brick farm with the large roofs show architecture of thr Benelux and the berets are rather a Walloon/ French fashion, so Belgium is my best guess.

I never heard of any reference to Hitler having any knowledge of a foreign language.

And even if he did he would never stoop to accommodate his visitor Chamberlain in addressing him in his language.

If you don't mind me asking but, how many of these kinds of photos do you have? The collection deserves not to be broken up. This would be like selling off your fathers medals to seperate buyers. A collection never to be together again.

He's got to be an officer or a someone who has intelligence. I wouldn't imagine a private having a "four star" **** service with a car whereas as so many had to walk in the mud. The way he is dressed also leads towards this conclusion, but it's hard to say because his jacket covers his rank markings.

a SS General wow! Now we are talking about officers. No wonder he got such a special treatment as a pow! Mitz would likely be Metz, in Lorraine right next to the Bulge area. Luxemburg and the Ardennes are just north. This confirms the Winter of 1944/1945 scenario.

St Lo is a famous battle field in the D-Day rrea (Normandy June/ July 1944)

The General could be General Kittel the defender of Metz. He was wounded in battle and found in an field hospital and taken pow while under morphine (head wound? )

    http://www.army.mil/CMH/books/wwii/lorraine/lorraine-ch09.html

"On the evening of 17 November the central exchange for the underground telephone system, located on the Ile Chambière, ceased to function and Kittel's over-all command ended.51 A few of the Germans outside the forts tried to make a fight for it in these last hours, but most were content to fire a few shots and then march into the American lines with their hands in the air. No real house-to-house battle was waged in the city of Metz, despite futile attempts to defend some of the headquarters buildings. By the night of 19 November American mopping-up operations were well along. On 21 November a patrol from the 95th Division found General Kittel in an underground field hospital, badly wounded (he had been fighting in the line) and under morphine. The next afternoon hostilities formally ceased-although a number of the forts continued to hold out.52 The 462d VG Division no longer existed. German sources later estimated that the actual casualties in the defense of Metz had been four hundred dead and some twenty-two hundred wounded, about half of whom had been evacuated before the city was encircled."

After a closer look I found a better candidate. I believe Kittel was Wehrmacht and besides too badly wounded to be sitting blindfolded in a car. He was actually found in a field hospital.
However I found the SS general we mat be looking for ! General DUNCKERN.
Dunkern tried to flee bu twas found on November 20th 1944 hiding in a local beer bar..... Dunkern was arrested and driven away ? So we may have a date and a name here. I would need to see a portrait of Dunkern and Kittel.
Last possibility: an Obert (Colonel ) surrendered in a ressitance pocket on Dec 7th. I saw his picture and he was dressed with the same leather jacket! His name is Oberst Vogel. See him doing it at the bottom of this page
