British Army ranks...

    What were the ranks in the British Army?

    Was it;
    Private
    Lance Corporal
    Corporal
    Sergeant
    Sergeant Major
    ?

    And then was was higher than Sgt. Major? Thankyou!

    It would also depend on unit.
    For example: Trooper, Gunner, Sapper etc. Basically meaning 'Private' within assorted different regiments.
    There are also other slight rank variations, and even ones of spelling, depending on which mob a given man served with, as there are in other WW2 participant armies.
    It can become quite complex 'translating' ranks, as there isn't always a direct comparator as one looks from Army to Army.
