This picture I believe is my grandad he was born 1901c He enlisted into the Royal Artillery in 1931 My problem is this is a RAF uniform... Can anyone help to identify the date the picture was taken? Many thanks Linda
Hello Linda, Isn't that an RAF Regiment cap badge? Quite a reasonable likelihood of a gunner ending up with them operating AA. (There were, after all, a lot of RA chaps to spread around). RAF Regiment History - Overview Do you have his service number? Just to double check the RA aspect. ~A
Thanks this is the first line I have looked into with my grandad that hasnt involved identity thieft!! ( a long story ) So it was possible to be in the RA and serve with the RAF at the same time? His regiment number was 816990 Linda
Hi again , You would happen to know why he seems to be wearing a black armband do you? Thanks again Linda
Hi, Linda. I can't help much with the photo, but have you tried to get his records? Here is a thread which lays out the steps you can take to get them. http://www.ww2f.com/military-servic...arch/36895-requesting-uk-service-records.html Good luck.
both cap and uniform buttoms are George VI area Raf symbols, not Royal Artillery (instead of an eagle you would have had crossed canons on the buttons)
Skipper sorry to be a dummy but I dont really understand what you mean? Are you saying that Royal Artillery in the RAF would have had Cannons, so this cannot be a RA RAF. Also, George IV area ....so does that mean picture is probably 1936c due to the black armbands? Linda
The uniform is certainly a pre war one (some gear is old WWI). 1936 could be a good guess (possibly 1937 as I doubt buttons were made as early as december 1936 and George VI was officially crowned in 1937) here is more http://www.raf.mod.uk/rafcms/mediafiles/03EC83E3_1143_EC82_2E99F68CFC68C27E.gif Raf buttons with GEORGE VI crown. royal artillery buttons
Skipper, Thank you so much for such a helpful reply. Dating this picture has been so very helpful Linda
