I have no idea what this was used for and can find nothing like it after a long internet search

Its about 12" x 4" x 4", black steel box with folding black leather lid with gusset and padlock hasp, the steel interior lined in chamois leather. Leather stamped with the government broad arrow and '1942' Its very portable so I guess the padlock was because the contents were dangerous rather than to prevent theft and the leather top and lining are, I guess, to protect something delicate and dangerous. I did think perhaps 'Time Pencil' or ';Fog Horn' detonators?

    Any ideas?

This looks like a British vehicle toolbox to me.
