As Ricky has expressed an interest.....what is your favourite Castle and why? I like Kidwelly Castle in Wales as I did my first ever medieval event there. Warwick Castle......lets not go into why!!!! Ummmm there must be others that I like......I will get back with them.
Where do I start, where do I start?!? Totternhoe Castle, Bedfordshire. Only earthworks remain of this motte & bailey (inner & outer, of course!), but they are lovely & clear. It is an Adulterine castle in Bedordshire, located on a spur off the Chitlerns - possibly the only real 100% defensive castle in the county. Oh, and lovely views from it! Mileham Castle, Norfolk. I did a lot of work there when at Uni, and got a bit obessed... Chateau Gaillard, France Obvious. If only King John had not insisted on big Chapel windows at ground level!
Hmm...one likes to try and imagine why nonetheless But I won't press you for details ...mystery often beats reality by a longshot Oh..castles..yes indeed..back to the topic.
I love Conwy in Wales, the castle, the town and the walls. It's like you could really be there when it was built FNG
Wow - Lego knights before I started buying them... before they had 'one-piece' Lego horses, and before they realised that good knights should have something manly like a lion on their shield, not a crown on a pink background! Somewhere I have a rough sketch I made of what Mileham Castle would possibly have looked like - I'll try and rescue it.
Sadly most of the stuff they call "castles" here in the Netherlands are pathetic post-1500 landed estates, and the best alternative is 16th/17th-century Trace Italienne forts and fortified towns (still quite awesome). Most of the castles I've seen in Belgium may have originated as early as the Roman occupation, but have been updated through the ages so that their most recent additions were made by the Dutch in the 1830s. Not exactly medieval, then...
Got some favorite castles too. This one is located just some 4 kilometers from where I live. In 1705, during the war of spanish sucession, it was the Headquarter of the allies, commanded by John Churchill of Marlborough.(An ancestor of the WW2 Churchill). Marlborough invaded France trough the Moselle valley, and was faced in this area by a french army under Maréchal De Villars. This one also is just some few kilometsres away from me, above the town of Sierck les Bains. It suffered dammages during the 30 years war, napoleonic wars, 1870, WW2.... But perhaps the most beautifull one I saw could be the Fortress of Bonaguil in Dordogne. It remained unviolated till the revolution.
That one....the Fortress of Bonaguil in Dordogne....now that's what I call a castle......WOWEEEE! Anyone up for travelling to France to go and play in a castle?
elephant and castle in se london...just a stones throw from the ministry of sound..surrounded by good clubs and pubs..not far from the old kent road which is ideal for cheap entertainment and cheaper women
I always liked Neuschwanstein though I don't believe it's medival The crusader castles were also fantastic and I'd love to visit some of them Whilst we have a glut of castles in the UK, I believe Wales has the most per square mile by country in Europe, the mainland ones are far pretty than our very bleak medival castles. It probably comes from the fact that in the UK castles were mainly feudal and also older which makes them plainer and smaller. I mean our castles were designed to withstand small rebellions/armies and by the 17 C they were being replaced by boring coastal gun forts rather than hill/mountain top redoubts. FNG
