Hey guys with Christmas coming I need suggestions as to what my friends and family can get me. I'd like to get some good books so as many as you guys can name, please. Especially list your favorites and top suggestions. It's be very much appreciated.
Hi everyone, New guy here....I am researching my uncles part in WW2...He was in 6 Airborne on D-day with the Ox and Bucks Li...He was a glider borne sniper. I have come across what must be the equal to 'The idiots guide' books of WW2 etc. They are published by Osprey and contain excellent breakdowns of who was doing what and when....Due to my interest I have just purchased D-day 1944 edition 3...This contains info on the Sword beach and Airborne landings. ISBN number 1-84176-366-7 There are of course books for other D-day beach attacks and loads more on the whole of WW2. Well worth a look try.... www.ospreypublishing.com I can only hope that the wife and kids get me edition 1 and 2 Regards Graham
On the field, what are you interestd in ? Luftwaffe stuff right ? Please be careful with the Osprey titles. yes cheap price but cheap information as well........and sometimes for incorrect.
How about a nice pair of comfy-cozy slippers to keep yer feet warm while ya read all your new WW11 books!! Happy Holidays Later
Martin, Thanks for the welcome. Erich, Are the Osprey books incorrect then? I am trying to do research so I want info that is bang on....Any suggestions as to such books. I am mainly interested in 6 Airborne and their part in D-day. Any help would be OK Regards Graham
Graham, the number-one definitive must-have is ; - ' With The 6th Airborne Division In Normandy ' by Lt.-Gen. R. N. Gale ( Sampson, Low & Marston, London, 1947 ) And also : ' Dropzone Normandy ' by Napier Crookenden ( Ian Allan, 1978 ). They're both a challenge to find to but well worth the effort. Another Forum member, Stevin Oudshoorn, recently found a copy of Gale's book online at a reasonable price. ( PS : Another one to watch out for is Sir Huw Wheldon's ' Red Berets Into Normandy - The 6th Airborne ' ; Jarrod, London 1082 ). Oh - and not to forget a personal account - Dudley Anderson's 'Three Cheers For The Next Man To Die ' ( Robert Hale, 1983 ). Anderson was a glider man so this one should be of particular interest. Hello, OTF - we all seem to have ignored your initial question. I've given this some thought and I'll make a small recommendation of books that are in the shops now ( not obscure rare books like I usually recommend ! ). All three are well-regarded, interesting to read ( you don't need a university degree to wade through them ) but are at the same time authoritative. In no particular order : - ' Decision In Normandy ' by Carlo d'Este ( ISBN 0-0609-2495-0 ) - the book about the Normandy campaign which I return to again and again. ' The Battered Bastards Of Bastogne ' by George Koskimaki ( ISBN 1-932033-06-8 ) - first-hand accounts from the REAL Band Of Brothers. ' Armor Battles Of The Waffen-SS ' by Will Fey ( ISBN 0-8117-2905-2 )- more first-hand accounts from the other side. Santa should be able to find those with a little help from his friends at Amazon....
Hi Graham, Also a warm welcome to these forums. I hope we will all be able to help eachother along our paths here! Enjoy reading and posting! As to the Gen. Gale book; I got that one not too long ago on Ebay.co.uk for a tenner! Very decent copy at that! Just last week one went for 25 GBP. Or try www.bookfinder.com This is my (and Martin's? ) treasure-trove....Plus all the obscure on-line booksellers and book antiqauriats (is that how you say it in English??) here and there....
Stevin, Thanks you for the welcome I think I have found a copy of the R N Gale book, just waiting for pay day so I can send my cheque off Must say, having read through some of the posts on these boards the users do know their stuff Regards Graham.
Well guys, what about the Russians, I don't hear alot of books about that side of the war, what's some good information books on that.
I'm not being patronising here - many Russian Front books in my collection are highly regarded but very dull to read ! ( But then I'm not an intellectual ! ) As a really good starting point and a good read, I'd have to recommend Antony Beevor's ' Stalingrad ' which is easily available anywhere. This also has a good bibliography which will lead you on to further reading.
I liked the Chuikov´s memoirs-not too much of the usual propaganda. He concentrates on the war more. Some ideas here..? Maybe?! http://www.historicalresearch.com/Books.html
Hey Kai, good stuff man. That's about all I need for now on books concerning Russia. How about the Holocaust, I'd like to know more about that, do you guys know any good books on that?
What a stroke of luck....... Walking past a book stall on a car boot sale and stuck at the front was a mint copy of Peter Harclerodes book "Go To It" a history of the 6 Airborne. The book starts from its inseption right up to its ending after Palestine. All that for £10.00 I am one very happy bunny Regards Graham
