    Hey

Was wondering if anyone here plays any of the Combat Mission games? Combat Mission: Beyond Overlord, Combat Mission: Barborossa to Berlin, Combat Mission: Africa Korps.

Collectively, the series covers terrain from North Africa to Finland, west from France to Stalingrad, with Greece, Crete, Italy, and everything in between. Great game - go to battlefront.com to check it out.

If anyone does play these games, want to play a PBEM?

I have Combat Mission Beyond Overlord and Barbarossa. I've done a few PBEM games, but quite frankly I used to find it somewhat fatiguing. CM is a game full of information, where you have to pay close attention to the slightest fold in the ground, that's difference between life and death!

Now if it were the good old Talonsoft's East Front or West Front that would be another matter, much much easier to play.

I could do a game or two in CM, if you don't mind occasional several days long waiting times between turns...

I could be up for a game or two. Though dont want to commit myself to too many games right now as Uni starts at end of august. I like the randomly generated maps, meeting engagement, 500 - 1000 pts, randomly chosen units, meeting engagements.

All right, but normally the random battle generator produces some pretty dumb battles. On the other hand there are plenty of ready made scenarios around, made by very knowleadgeable people. There's a large community out there designing scenarios, mods, etc.

Take a look at www.combatmission.com for a start.

http://c.webring.com/navcgi?ring=combatmission;list lists 35 sites for you to choose ;)

And of course the Combat Mission home is at www.battlefront.com

Best map i've ever played so far was a randmoly generated one. And the ones i am playing right now seem pretty even. Scenarios tend to be onesided, or one side is attack another. I like Meeting Engagements - dont know where the enemy is and you both have to attack/defend the objective. Am up for even-matched scenarios though.

I suppose we can alternate, I like Attack/Defense scenarios [IMG]

I suppose what we need to do now is to synchronise versions to the latest downloads so we're compatible. I don't know at what point I am, right now. I'll come back to you on this matter.

May I suggest we start with CM-BO as it has less bells and whistles, so we can gain some experience? Of course CM-BB has more "taste", but we could start with something simpler.

Besides, I'm a Russian by nature, so I'll be anxious to graduate to CM-BB :D

i personally prefer real-time WW2 strategy games, like "blitzkrieg" or close combat. Combat Mission is great, but it throws too much information at you, and i dont like the turned base feel around it

Combat Mission is a great game, but it can be so tiring to play. I've got the first two games, can't play PBEM though because the computer on which I game has no internet connection.

Also, they experience dramatic slowdown on my computer, with big-time mouse and scroll lag, despite the fact that it's hardly weak. Which annoys me.

And of course the lack of a campaign mode is a real tragedy. Single battles or operations just go so far.

I like CM quite a lot. The Operations are like mini-campaigns, spanning over a few maps. Having a campaign mode would be rather difficult with all the variables and maps etc - would be really complicated to try and figure out. No lag or anything on my computer (or laptop) so i dont know what to tell you. I have CMBO, CMBB and CMAK. If there were enough people here who played, i'd suggest we start a little WW2F Tourney.

I find CM tiring too, and quite frankly that is something I can do without now.

It's not the same thing, obviously, but I like Talonsoft's East Front / West Front / Rising Sun much more satisfying overall. However these seem to be pactically 'abandonware', although there are some people who faithfully cling to them, see www.theblitz.org

Of course no doubt CM is a heck of a much better simulation, the mechanics are excellent. My only gripe is my life won't allow me time to enjoy it properly, which is not the game's fault.
