Just for me to stray once from the norm, and kinda cool pix; cannon and the Dunker church in the background, Antietam National Battlefield Park, Sharpsburg, Maryland U.S.A. The Civil War. I took this when I was there last year as I have visited frequently. I have volumes on the war, I have read many, but not a scholar on it...............I thoroughly enjoy the history. Gettysburg also. And, limbers at Antietam...............

That was the theory, but the 28-knot BBs operated with carriers throughout the war. When a separate battle line was formed, such as TG58.7 at the Philippine Sea or TF34 at Leyte Gulf, it included both 28- and 33-knot BBs. When Halsey recognized the threat of Kurita's battle fleet off Samar, he initially sent all six of his battleships south to meet them. Eventually he sent Iowa and New Jersey ahead with just a squadron of destroyers in support; that seems to be the only occasion when their extra few knots came into play - although they were still too late. The other rationale for the Iowas was to match the Kongo class, after we learned that their speed had been increased from 26 to 30 knots. There was some concern that they might operate as independent scouts or commerce raiders and have to be hunted down by fast American battleships, but nothing like that ever happened.
