During the Lapland War, German army under the command of General Lothar Rendulich used the tactics of the scorched earth. In Lapland, 30% of the buildings were destroyed, and the city of Rovaniemi, the birthplace of Finnish Santa Claus – Joulupukki, was destroyed to its foundations.
