The ship between Constitution and the BBs is also interesting, a French Bougainville class aviso or sloop, intended mainly for overseas service in the French colonial empire. For this reason they had excellent accommodations including air conditioning and facilities to serve as a flagship, since they might be the "capital ship" on some remote station.

The destroyer further up in the photo appears to be a then-brand-new Farragut class.

I think those are Lahti L-39 20mm antitank rifles, one of the most powerful of that class of weapons. 20mm was pushing the limits for a man-operated gun, but it was designed to reduce the recoil.

Elephant gets going really fast. At take-off speed the pilot releases the tow cable.

I was just wondering about the quality of the Airfix model kits? I have seen them advertised but never tried one. I have built a lot of models. Revell models seemed to have regressed in quality. Now Tamiya has the upper hand, or so it seems from the reviews. I only ever built one of their destroyer models and was pleased with it,

I bought my model kits 40 years ago. The quality never bothered me as much as painting them and the crew. If you do not paint them you have no problem. I bought some 10 years ago some 20 model kits as kids these days do not build models. They just keep phoning each other and playing games in the net. Must admit anyway Tomb raider and Resident evil were my favourites and legacy of Kain with ps2. The name not making it my fave. And Bloodrayne. The movies were crap. The game was great.

Tamiya always had the upper hand but in the States, they were usually expensive.

Airfix tanks & planes were good quality, but the warships were problematic(especially the 2apiece hulls).

Revell and Monogram varied in quality but were reasonably priced.

Mind you, this is based on kits 30-40 years ago.
