Might engine production have been factor? How difficult would it be to switch a factory from building Allisons to Merlins? Or for a plant or workforce used to building inline engines to turn to radials?

Total production cost was also a consideration; this is from a discussion a few years back:

    P-38 $97,147
    P-47 $85,578
    P-51 $51,572
    P-40 $44,892
    P-39 $42,384

Well from what I've recently read about the P-40, when the US entered the war it was the most plentiful fighter aircraft in the USAAF inventory. It was easy and cheap to make, easily maintained in the field and most importantly it was already in large scale production at the time when lots of everything was needed. Other aircraft were being added to the production lines at the time like you suggested, the P-38s, P-47s for example, but how they would contribute to the war effort in terms of effective use was yet to be learned. Remember, the P-51s US built Allison engines did not operate as desired at altitudes above 15,000 feet where much air combat in Europe was being conducted. It wasn't until the British began putting the Merlin/Rolls Royce engines in the P-51s, and later the US started putting Packard engines into the P-51Ds in mid 1943 or so that the Mustang became the air supremacy fighter that we all know and love. The P-40 (my all time fav US warbird) was discontinued in production in 1944, with about 12,000 built. The P-39 was also hampered by the lack of desired performance at higher altitudes, but functioned well enough at medium and lower heights which made it more valuable as a ground attack aircraft than a first line fighter. It was discontinued in 1944 also, with about 9,500 airframes built. The Rooskies loved them. The P-39s and P-40s were there early on when we needed them.

Hope this clears things up a bit. I must admit that I was intrigued by your question and had the look into myself after thinking about it. Now we must wait patiently until Takao comes in and sets us all straight.

This was the first YB-29 produced, it's designation was changed to XB-39 when the original engines were swapped out to test the Allisons.
