I'm thinking of ordering Cross of Iron and Stalingrad (1993) on Amazon and I have never seen either of the movies and won't be able to unless I order them. Can anyone tell me anything about the movies?

Cross of Iron and Stalingrad are both excellent movies. Stalingrad is in German. I will supply you witht the names to two other must see movies tomorrow, one is also in German and is the "Original" Stalingrad, and was done in I think 1958. It is also very well done. The other title I think is called Winter War, and is about the Fin/Russian War.

I have seen and own Cross of Iron. It is about the conflict between a highly decorated vetern NCO and a Prussian Officer who seeks the Iron Cross. I don't want to give away the plot but it is along the lines of Das Boot. A protrayal of the way the daily wartime routine from the German point of view. Don't know if it is a true story but I can see some similarities in the movie and what I have been told. I liked it very much.

Definetly get them both. I have the 1993 Stalingrad on DVD and its excellent, I have heard that CoI was a terrible transfer to DVD, and pretty much everyone says get it on VHS instead! This is probably true, as I have stayed away from buying the DVD transfer.

Youll really like both movies on whatever format you get them on, I couldnt recommened either highly enough. ;)

Cross of Iron was a good movie, had a good feel for the german fighting man.Having said that it was woefully miscast. While James Coburn was passable as Steiner, most of the other main characters were ancient! What were they thinking of? James Mason must of been about 75 at the time.

It really wasnt THAT all bad, but I even though Sir Richard Burton will always be a favorite British/Scottish/Welsh actor of mine, he was simply too old for the roll as a combat sergeant in the German Heer. Plus the nutty parts about the nazi party. The political crap should have been left out.

All in all, I dont remember it being that bad of a movie, but then again, I havent seen it for about 10 years and we all know that my memory lacks.

I havent seen CoI but I am reading the book and if the film is half as good as the book then it is pretty damn brilliant. I am thinking about getting CoI on VHS perhaps from Amazon or wherever. I may try to borrow a copy from someone as I am currently on the poor side of skint. How close is the film based on the book? I think my only complaint about the book is that basicaly the plot (at least the bit about the conflict between Steiner and Stransky) is given away within the first two chapters. I may be wrong about this though, I'll find out in a week or two though I suppose.

Thanks, glad I wasnt alone. I hated the part that has Steiner get killed. I know it was meant to be a sad senceless loss. Not that the writing was bad but was too long on certain things and not enough on others.

Nearly every Hollywood and Blockbuster video in America has copies of both movies. They are pretty easy to find. In Hollywood they are under the "WAR" section, at Blockbuster CoI is in "Action", and Stalingrad will be found in the "Foriegn/Special Interest" section, right next to Das Boot.
Try finding a copy of the Finnish movie "Winter War". Now thats hard.
A decent DVD I just ordered, Titans of Steel, is pretty good. Its 2 hours of Tank V. Tank action.

I wish I could say that the Blockbusters and Hollywood Videos around here had them in stock. I played hell for 6 months just to get a Hollywood Vidoe store near my house to order a copy, and that was only after many complaints to the store manager, and to the area manager.

Well, I went to go check it out for the third time about 2 months ago, and they couldnt find their copy   then I checked back about a week later, and somone else said it was either sold, or lost   that was the last time I had been in their store.

Offhand, I dont recall the names of the links listed on this sites main page, but there are a few in there that will have this movie for sale. I know Amazon.com has it, as I tried to order it about a month ago, but the computer was messing up, and I never was able to complete the order,

There is a site that Roland Fogt gave us the link to, and it was listed along with Die Brucke, and the ORIGINAL Stalingrad movie from the 1950s. Something with the name of Teufel Hunds or words to that effect in its title. This film too is in German, and is well done. I think Wolfgang Priess is in it.

I watched it for the first time while visiting a friend of mine in Rickenbach, Switzerland. This too is a great movie.

I was in the mall today and saw Cross of Iron in a store and bought it. I have just finished watching it and I have to say Wow. It's a good movie, but there were some weird parts. Like the german soldier and the russian woman in the barn with the biting. Ouch. Also the ending seemed weird to me. But overall it was a good movie. I found another movie it was Called When trumpets blar or something like that. It takes place in the Hurtegen. The movie was made in 98, but I never heard of it. Can anyone tell me about.

    - An excellent movie, isn't it?

Too bad that you non-Finns have to settle for the short 2 hour version ;) , as I have both the original 3+ hour movie (in Finnish) AND the TV-series version, which is SO much better and is "only" some 5 hours long!
