Hi. I watched a documentary called "Cruise of the Secret Raiders", about the German ships disguised as merchantmen, which had hidden deck guns, and torpedo tubes. Just how many of these raiders were there in the second world war. The video didn't say; it just focused on the two main ones. I'd like to know because I am writing a book on WW2, and I need all the info I can get.
You will probably want to get a copy of Conway's All the World's Fighting Ships 1922-1946 and/or Fleets of World War II. The latter is especially wonderful, and I'm not saying that simply because I wrote it.... Conway's will usually run you around $50US. It has lots of lists and statistics. I'm selling off my last few copies of Fleets for $25US. It has fewer stats but discusses the real-world capabilities of the designs.
Germans had about dozen of those ships and japanese had few. Dunno if Japanese ships were disguised or just normal AMC's. Ofcourse British (+CW) had AMC's too, just like Italians and French. Apparently USA operated 'Q'-ships with little or no success.
Hmmm, Yeah. What do you reckon about the midget subs. I have a book which talks about the Chariot two man torpedoes used by the British, and how they tried to destroy the Tirpitz using them.
Thanks. The Japs also used human torpedoes, but in that case they really were. They would climb inside a modified torpedo, and drive it straight into a ship
Yeah, I thought so. Just as well to, otherwise the Americans would have really been badly off, with Kamikaze attacks from the air, and the sea.
