Denmark is sending 4 Leopard 2A5 to Afghanistan

    The netting is the swedish Barracuda system.

    It has two purposes:

    1. It reduces the vehicles IR signature

    2. It reduces the temperature inside the vehicle.

    I got the original info (10,000 lb difference) from a tanknet forum post from some time ago. After some checking of my own the best information I can come up with results in a difference closer to 5000 lbs. It's hard to find numbers but it appears that the Abrams powerpack weighs 4.2 tons or about 8,400 lbs.
    I would imagine that the higher overall weight of the Abrams is due to the heavy, dense DU in the armor.

    The benefits of having MBT's in this role aside, what it does give is the Danish Army, a serious logistical exercise not to mention its tankers some real experience in a harsh enviornment.

    Interesting to see the big Cats on the prowl in Central asia, under the Danish flag.
