Hi all, I am looking for all kinds of information of destroyer Friedrich Eckholt. Can someone help me?
Volkbert......such as ? did you just pick up a cap talley by chance from one of the militaria sites ? Z-16, Friedrich Eckholdt, Type 34A ordered on January 19, 1935 laid down on November 4, 1935 in yard # B505 under Blohm and Voss im Hamburg. launched March 21, 1937 Completed July 28, 1938 and had 5 commanding offiziers the last being K.Kapitän Schemmel in the temporary position from December 23, 1942-December 31, 1942. She served in Poland, North Sea, Norway, the Western France and Norwary again from 1941-1942. She was sunk by gunfire from the HMS Sheffield during the Battle of the Barents Sea on 31 December 1942. der Altenwolf
If he was able to get a cap tally--it would have set him back about $125--$150.00. Can you imagine a Bismarck or Tirpitz tally price range--probably $600.00 range or more
I think your right and it would make perfect sense if he did have the Z-16's cap tally to get a nice bio and maybe a pic or two of the K. Kapitän's and the ship before it's demise. Would make a charming framed item and yes any of the named bug Schiffe's would go for 500.00 US plus no doubt ! ~E
Yeah that and--get a load of this. I do not know what site it was on but--they had for sale a cap tally belonging to a member of the Kaisers yacht crew. It was full length and in very nice condition as well. I don't remember the price but--this tally was even rarer than surviving Wilhelm Gustloff tallys. I think the Kaisers entire yacht crew numbered less than 12--but not sure. Oh and this is quite different than from the ship he used as well.
Whoa ! Impressive Carl, only 12 well I better look deeper for Volkbert on this Z-16 just in case he wants that special item hangin on the wall of his office
Erich - Thanks for the info!! The reason I inform about this destroyer is that I have a photo album of a KM man. He served at the Friedrich Eckholt. Besides the photo album I have a reward booklet of him for the sports award. Last year Barbara and I did some research and we found one of his former houses, his grave and his stepdaughter. We spent three hours talking with her and we were very excited. She also liked it very much as the photo album had been stolen from her. I gave it back to her because I thought it belonged more to the family than in my collection. After two weeks she sent me the book and told me to keep it. This man also was rewarded with the destroyer's badge and EKII. I already have an EKII and will buy a destroyer badge too in the future. I saw you also think about a destroyer's badge. If anyone has more info or pictures of the Friedrich Eckholt please post. This ship is hardly noticed in literature I have.
Volkbert : That was quite excellent on your part to visit the gents familie and return the photo album. At least she was able to relive some of his memories during the war, very honorable of you to see her and participate in the joy she must have felt while looking through the photos. Yes a Destroyer badge would be nice but my funds are a bit stretched right now unfortunately. And of course you are quite correct about the Friedrich Ekholdt and the other destroyers besides. Too few titles covering them and their operations as the workhorses of the German fleet. ~E
