When passing through Munster today, I made the mistake of pointing out signs for this museum to my husband, so we will be visiting it in the next few days. He will be enthusing about mechanical details, so I may as well make myself useful. Are there any particular photos wanted, or do I just post the lot?
I certainly am! Doing WW2 North West Europe in 6 weeks.. Most memorable and poignant is where my father landed on Gold beach in Normandy plus visiting grave sites of his colleagues and going through the Falaise Gap where it was said the stench from German dead was appalling, In the next few days I will be at Bergen-Belsen concentration camp that my father saw. I have mixed feelings about it - going as a 'tourist'. - feels wrong somehow. Next year I hope to follow my father-in-laws journey through Sicily and Italy. I am writing this all up for his great grandchildren and for the generations to come so that they know the sacrifices that these men made.
You're a good wife. Mine would have been pointing out the exotic leaves on the trees on the other side of the road.
Well, I have dragged him over Europe so I suppose a day with Boys Toys is not too much to ask. Only hope that there is a good cafe on site where I may take a break.
As it's unlikely that I will ever view these sites personally, the best I can hope for is to see them vicariously. Please post as many photos as you can. I look forward to them.
Tomorrow the Centurion, LEOPARD 2 A4 and BMP 1 are open to the public. On July 12th there is even more to see: https://translate.google.de/translate?sl=de&tl=en&js=y&prev=_t&hl=de&ie=UTF-8&u=http%3A%2F%2Fwww.daspanzermuseum.de%2Findex.php%3Fid%3D93&edit-text= PS: The signs along the Autobahn are VERY hard to miss.
Well Mrs. toki2, as much as I like WW2 my real passion would be to be drug around Europe in general looking at villages, cities, castles, museums, listening to Bach being played locally, trying regional food and wines, exploring lanes and byways so you are not alone. Now I do go to military places but incidental to cultural and natural things. Ummmmmmmmmmm, maybe I wil be demoted and cashiered out of the group. , or shot for mutiny . Ideally one can balance both. Gaines
History in all of it's forms, my friend, history in all of it's forms. Although a special trip to Bovington, Saumur, Munster, or the Ardennes, would be quite nice.
My visit last September was certainly oriented toward the war but I really enjoyed going through the churches and made every attempt to look inside every one I came across. I would love to go back and just drive through the countryside, stopping to look at the local churches.
Such a true statement. Ive toured numerous WW2 sites, but I'm also interested in the cultural part of history. The idea of a Renaissance man intrigues me. I have interests beyond WW2.
This is a special trip following my fathers wartime journey from Normandy to Hamburg visiting every place in the war diary . We are taking 5 weeks to do only this. It has been very difficult missing out on amazing churches , museums etc but we are covering a whole swathe of NW Europe . We however have managed to sample the local wine beer and food . It was hard but someone has to do it .
